The Big Idea
The idea for Little Nomad came from an unexpected place. When we became parents in 2012, we didn't anticipate such a supportive and welcoming community of families. We didn’t expect to become friends with other adults simply because we both had children. We didn’t expect to be in a babysitting cooperative.
Out of conversations with other parents in our community grew an idea for a shop that we feel our city is missing - a modern children’s apparel shop. We want to provide a space where ALL feel comfortable and represented; a space that showcases high quality, independently produced items that are accessible in price; a space that highlights our local talent and makers.

The Impact
Our City Needs This
Richmond is slated to become home to numerous new businesses. More young professionals and families are flocking to the city in numbers we havent seen in decades. New homes, apartments, and hotels are being built within close proximity. City dwellers expect access to local shopping opportunities. With such a rich history, the Jackson Ward neighborhood and Broad Street corridor make the perfect location for Little Nomad. After many years of neglect, this corridor is once again becoming a destination for locals and out of towners. Little Nomad fills a void in the local shopping scene.
Partnerships and Collaborations are Important
One of the best parts of being a small business is helping other small businesses find success. Our goal is to facilitate this success through our shop by using, selling, promoting, and collaborating with other great local products and businesses.
Brick and Mortar Retail Is Alive
We see this space not only for retail, but as a space created for community focused events, including conversations with local authors and artists, civic meetings, networking gatherings, and workshops focused on the health and wellness of families and our children.
We understand that selling a shirt isn't going to change the world, but we strongly believe we can change the narrative of what a locally owned shop can do and be for ALL of the community.
*Below is an example of a previous community event that we co-hosted.

Risks & Challenges
Although we are very confident in the success of Little Nomad, all startups come with a certain amount of risk.
However, we have no doubt we will overcome these risks by:
- Relying on strong retail experience
- High focus on leveraging Brick and Mortar with online sales
- Creating strategic and consistent marketing campaigns
- Working closely with mentors, other Broad Street merchants, and the city's economic development department to help Broad Street become the top shopping destination it deserves to be.
