My name is Joe and my wife and I are looking at moving from Oklahoma to Kauai or Seattle.  My friend jokingly said I should try crowd funding to get there, but the more I thought about it the more I actually think it will work.  What I'm really hoping for is a "filthy rich person" with more money than they know what to do with, who is also just crazy enough to say "What's a couple million to me?  No big deal.  I'll help these guys out."  I know that person is out there.

My wife and I live in a small town on the south side of Oklahoma City, OK.  We love it here and have many great friends.  But we are so over the tornadoes!  It's time to move on.  Whenever you hear about the massive killer tornadoes that have torn through Moore and caused incredible damage, those tornadoes went through our town first.  We have spent a lot of time over the years in our tornado shelter, not knowing if our home would be destroyed or not.  Last May for example, our neighbors, their dog and cat, along with my wife and I and our two dogs, hid in our shelter FOUR TIMES in ONE night!  It was absolutely crazy.

The first tornado was a mile-wide F-4 that was taking direct aim at our house.  We got in the shelter when the sirens went off and waited for it to destroy our house.  Then the power went out.  Then it started hailing.  We prepared for the worst.  Miraculously, the tornado turned left about a mile from the house and went north of us.  We lucked out yet again.  Unfortunately, it destroyed the small town in its path.

An hour later I received a text from a friend who said she was watching the weather on TV and there was another tornado heading directly for us.  We again got in the shelter and waited.  This one turned south of us at the last moment.  An hour later, there was a third one heading for us so we got back in the shelter.   It fizzled out before reaching us.

Finally, about 10 pm we received word that we were about to be hit with 90 mph straight line winds.  We climbed back in the shelter as the winds hit us.  It was like a hurricane.  We lost a dozen large oak trees and our fence, but luckily none of the trees landed on the house.  The metal roof on the church across the street blew off and wrapped around one of our trees.  It was a wild night for sure.

And now tornado season has just begun and we have two and a half more months to go.  Not looking forward to it.

So why Kauai?  After a recent vacation to The Garden Island, we fell in love with it.  If you've ever been there you know what I'm talking about.  It's so beautiful, but what we really love about it is that there aren't that many people living on the island.  We want to get away from big cities and all the problems they present such as crowded freeways, endless traffic jams, high rise buildings everywhere, and lots of crime.  While I'm sure there is some crime on Kauai, it's not nearly as bad as in the bigger cities.  We could definitely get used to the lifestyle over there, which is slow paced, laid back, and relaxed.  The people we met were so friendly and they all said they loved living on the island.  The only downside is it's SO OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE to live there.  Housing costs are very high, as are food and gas, and everything has to be shipped in.   Which is where the filthy rich person comes in.

If we can't swing Kauai, then our second option is Seattle.  We have friends and business customers that live there and everyone just raves about how much they love it there.  So we recently took a trip to visit some friends and see for ourselves.  And they were right!  It's absolutely beautiful.  And according to our friends, it doesn't rain as much as everyone thinks.  Not a bad second choice.

My wife and I have worked hard our entire lives.   We are in our fifties and would love to move to paradise and de-stress and live happily ever after.  Two years ago I left my 18-year career at a giant phone company because I was so burned out with the whole corporate BS and thought if I don't leave I'm going to have a heart attack.  This was not the same company that I started at 18 years earlier.  Sadly, I have heard the same from many of my friends and family about companies they work with.  It seems that corporations now are so concerned about keeping the stock holders happy that they have totally forgotten about their employees, and their customers.  They have taken away all the perks from their employees that used to make these companies great places to work.  And they replaced the perks with outrageously high quotas, longer hours, endless conference calls and meetings, action plans, fire drills, and other time wasting, non-productive tasks, which have raised the stress levels for employees through the roof.  Even young employees are concerned about having a heart attack from their job.

My wife works at a giant computer company and she is really good at what she does, however, she is so overworked and stressed out everyday it makes her physically ill.  She says that some of her co-workers actually sit at their desk and cry because they are so stressed out.  This is not the American Dream.  We should not have to work ourselves to death.

We are so ready to cut the stress from our lives.  That's where Kauai comes in.  We figure it will take a couple of million to purchase a nice, large property (which we will need to house the many friends and family that are surely going to come visit), and have money to support us and allow my wife to leave her job.  We have some of it, but not nearly enough.  Half of that will get us to Seattle.

So if you are that filthy rich person (and I know there are many of you out there), please consider helping.  Or maybe your reason for helping is to tick off your kids, or your parents (this will most definitely do it), or your cheating, soon-to-be ex-husband, it doesn't matter what the reason.  It helps to have a little crazy side as well. We'll make sure to get someplace with a nice large guest house that you can come use whenever you want.  We'll become best buds.  You'll really like us as you'll find we are good people.

If you aren't filthy rich but know someone who is, make sure they see this.

Thanks for your support.  Let's do this before the next tornado hits our house!

Joe
