MALEVOLENT is about a young woman named Miriam DeKalb (Dani Lennon, FearNet/Machinima's BITE ME) who works for a non-profit which promotes global peace initiatives. When her billiionaire sociopath father Cyrus (Ray Wise) learns he is dying, Cyrus calls Miriam and her three siblings together to "discuss his will." However, what he actually has planned is to pronounce judgment on them all. They are, in his view, traitors, and he has grisly death traps planned for each of them.

The wrinkle: a race of intergalactic gamblers, who wager on human conflicts as bloody sport, have chosen Miriam as their protagonist for this match. Thus the entire situation is being manipulated by the Gamemaster (Morena Baccarin,) who has the power to reverse time and reconfigure events as they play out. And so the playing field is constantly changing under Miriam's feet -- sometimes to her benefit, but usually, not. Through it all, The Overseer (William Shatner) calls the game.

We like to describe MALEVOLENT as "Saw" meets "Groundhog Day."

MALEVOLENT means everything to us. Our core team has literally been working on this project for years, giving it our all. Animated movies generally require millions of dollars. Yeah, well, we don't have millions. But we have heart. And we have talent and passion and geek fighting spirit! We've put together an international team of 21 artists and colorists, many of whom who have been working on this project for over a year. There's a lot on the line for all of us, but we are heartened by the support we've received thus far, and the reactions we've gotten at places like Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo, where we did a panel and screened work-in-progress footage.

See, MALEVOLENT isn't just a genre movie. It has something to say, and plays with themes of hope vs. hopelessness, redemption, social commentary and above all, finding the power within to fight back, even when the deck is so ridiculously stacked against us. This is a message we feel strongly about.

This day just keeps getting worse.

Where does all the money go?

Making a hand-drawn animated movie is expensive! We have been in production for a year, and we are about 7-8 months away from completion -- but our internal financing is running low.  We need your help. We need to raise money for:

Director Jason Axinn is a USC Cinema/Television School grad. His directing/producing credits include SPACE GUYS IN SPACE and STARPOCALYPSE, and numerous commercials for companies like Microsoft, Verizon and Sega.

Our amazing producers Cindi Rice and Paige Barnett worked together at Epic Level Entertainment, where they served up awesomeness such as the hit web series BITE ME for FearNet/Machinima. Cindi's 16-year career includes DRAGONS OF AUTUMN TWILIGHT, KNIGHTS OF BLOODSTEEL, DORKNESS RISING and XOMBIE. Paige is a 10-year+ production manager/producer who is also a software production exec with citizine.tv. Her credits include MACHINIMA BRASIL/LATINO, H+ THE DIGITAL SERIES, and MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY, season 1.

is the designer of MALEVOLENT. His long career in fantasy illustration includes works for the Dungeons & Dragons series, Magic: The Gathering and Wizards of the Coast. Bought fantasy role-playing books? Then you've reveled in Carl's art.

Why We Need YOU - and What You Get!

What we're trying to do is something no one has ever done before, and that means we need resources. The $45K ask will give us the precious resources we need to finish the film, including being able to hire additional animators, a sound designer/mixer and composer. As well, we've got stretch goals going all the way up to $275K. Every dollar helps ensure that MALEVOLENT will be one for the ages, and the more we raise, the more awesome the movie will be.

We've already gotten a ton of press on this -- coverage on sites like Nerdist and Dread Central, and we've even been featured on CNN's The Buzz Today! And the movie's not even done yet. Imagine the splash this is going to make -- and we want you guys to be part of this. We ain't nothing without you!

Behold Axey the fire ax, Miriam's weapon of choice in MALEVOLENT. No matter how she tries, she can't get rid of the darn thing. And by the end, she doesn't want to. Axey is a REAL fire ax, not a prop, and she is HEAVY (7 lbs.) and she is DANGEROUS. Capable of smashing down doors and inflicting dire mayhem, although we do NOT recommend this! We used Axey in all of our reference photos, and you can see her figuring prominently in our poster (artwork by the incredible Daniel Oduber.) Axey will be signed by actress Dani Lennon (who plays Miriam,) as well as our director and producing team and anyone else we can corral. This one-of-a-kind giveaway will be awarded at the conclusion of our campaign.

We've got ambitious plans for MALEVOLENT. If we hit our $45K goal, that will be enough for us to finish the movie, and it will rock most mightily. But the more we raise, the better the movie will be. As well, hitting higher tiers of fund-raising will unlock all sorts of new awesomeness.
