Dear friends,

I was recently blessed with the opportunity to visit the beautiful country of Zambia to see my daughter, who is a volunteer there.  The highlight of my trip was getting to stay in the rural village where she lives and meet her host family.  That was where I met Miyoba, a bright young woman full of potential.  Miyoba has dreamed of going to college since she was young, but her family lacks the financial resources to send her.  Our family was able to get the resources together to support her first semester at Evelyn Hone College, where she began studying biomedical engineering in January this year, and we are asking your help to sponsor the rest of her education.

Miyoba graduated from grade twelve in 2013 with great results and has been in the village waiting to attend college since. She was admitted into a university last year, but was unable to accept admission because her older sister was also accepted into a teaching college at the same time. Miyoba's father can afford to send one of his children to college at a time by growing vegetables in his garden, which is truly incredible for a village family.  He works unbelievably hard to provide for his ten children, but he barely scrapes together enough for one college student every term. It was only possible to send one of his girls.  Miyoba handled the crushing disappointment in stride and has continued to labor alongside her family in the village.

Only a few girls from Miyoba's village go on to secondary (high) school and of those few, only about half will complete their grade twelve education. The rest of the girls will either be married off, starting as young as grade six or younger, become pregnant and stop school to care for their child, or their parents will not have the money for school fees, sometimes preferring to educate the male children instead. For a young woman from the village to be successful in her education and continue on to college is an incredible accomplishment. Miyoba knows of only two young women from her area who have attended college, one of which is her older sister.

Miyoba is a wonderful, motivated, intelligent young woman who comes from an amazing family.  She grew up in a village approximately ten miles outside a town called Choma.  Until she became friends with my daughter, she had never been beyond Choma. I recognized her immense potential and encouraged her to apply to college again this year on the promise we would find the money.   She traveled to the capital city of Lusaka alone (her first time leaving Southern Province) and successfully secured her own college admission.  Miyoba decided to study biomedical engineering, a very marketable degree in Zambia.

Their family does so much for my daughter on a day to day basis, it is a privilege to be able to do something for theirs.  We were able to afford Miyoba's first semester, but we are asking your help to ease the financial burden for her remaining five semesters.  The money pays her tuition and fees, the purchase of required books and materials, and her housing and living expenses.  Any funds left over be rolled over towards her younger sisters' education.

We thank you in advance for helping make such a huge impact in Miyoba's life.  You cannot imagine how much this opportunity to further her education means to her and her family.

Sincerely,

Linda
