ModRoomz: Eco Modular Furniture for Modern Living.

The Problem:

Most furniture only serves one purpose. You use it for that purpose, then you throw it or give it away! Seems a little crazy doesn’t it? And a total waste of money and natural resources.

The Solution:

ModRoomz furniture is different - it’s adaptable, reusable and eco-friendly!

The Story:

I'm Dani Zargel, a designer from England with over 25-years creative industry experience. I moved to the US in 2012 to be with my incredible wife Valeska after running my own small creative agency just outside London. I'm also that guy... you know, the one who can build flatpack furniture without reading the instructions and has an uncanny knowledge of how to build things from scratch, do the plumbing and electrical work - I also love to cook & read books! I've always been weird like that :-)

Anyway, the ModRoomz concept initially came about in around 2006 when I saw my sister & some friends buying big, expensive furniture for their new babies. They'd buy a crib, a changing cabinet and drawers to match! It was a huge expense! Then, just a few years later, they threw out that furniture & start all over again with something new.

It just seemed crazy but I wasn't at a stage in my life where I could realise this vision just yet so it went on the back-burner...

Flash forward to late-2013: my wife and I have our first baby on the way & we're super excited! She;s due in August and we can't wait to be a first-time parents.

As we were walking around what felt like a million shops, looking at the poorly designed, crazy expensive kids furniture, I realised that now would be the perfect time to bring ModRoomz to life - there had to be a better, more beautiful, less expensive and far more practical way to do this.

So I started researching furniture designs and realised that there's nothing out there that allows you to buy a piece of furniture and grow it with your child. Yes, there's ugly cribs that convert to day beds but they don't offer any storage solutions! And of course, there's hundreds of bunks and platform beds that look good, but they can only ever be used for one purpose - then you're back to buying new stuff when your kids outgrow that! And none of them contain reusable, interchangeable storage options!

When you look into it, it's really scary just how much furniture just gets trashed or mothballed when it's outlived it's original purpose. It's also even scarier when you find out just how many nasty chemicals and toxins exist in most of that furniture that are known or at least suspected of causing all sorts of nasty illnesses and allergies!

Which is why I knew that ModRoomz had to be different! It had to be super safe in terms of stability and strength, it also had to be eco-friendly and most importantly, the materials used to produce it had to be baby, kid & planet friendly meaning no nasty chemicals or toxins!

It also had to be beautiful and incorporate the modern-European design style that I love and I grew up with.

So... ModRoomz is beautiful European-styled eco & family friendly contemporary furniture. It's constructed using incredible, super-strong, reusable modular cubes called ModCubes.

Think of IKEA and Lego having a baby and you'll get the picture :-)

So, why am I crowd funding?

I'm crowd-funding because I'm just one guy with a dream to create safe & beautiful furniture for parents, growing families or anyone who appreciates beautiful furniture & wants to maximise their space.

I don't have endless cash available to put into this project. I've literally put in hundreds and hundreds of hours and thousands of $'s of my own money to get ModRoomz to where it is now. I've dedicated all of my time to this project and I passionately and truly believe in it and it's potential.

 

Prototypes & Testing

As you can see from some of these photos, I've built the prototypes to prove the concept. You can see more prototypes in development here in the prototype gallery. 

The prototypes worked brilliantly! They're a little rough around the edges because they are just test models but they look amazing, worked perfectly and were incredibly strong - you can see me sitting 5-foot up on top of them just below :-)

The only problem is, to build them by hand one unit at a time is slow, laborious and regardless of how hard I try, it's impossible to get every piece 100% accurate. And 99% accurate just won't do - they need to be perfect to work properly!

 

So what's the money for?

Equipment! To be precise, I need to purchase a highly accurate and super efficient CNC machine which is a computer controlled router. This will enable me to produce ModRoomz furniture in-house and in higher volumes with perfect precision.

 

How is your campaign different?

My campaign is different because I'm not asking for hundreds of dollars in contributions from people, I'm just asking for a token gesture of $1 upwards from as many people as possible who will then spread the word and help me reach my goal!

I want to reach $100k so I'll need a little support from a lot of people!

Obviously, if you want to give me more than $1 then great (and thank you) - feel free to give as much as you want and can afford!

Almost everyone can afford a $1 and most people want to see other people succeed!

So how does the funding work?

Once I reach the goal of $100k, for every single $1 gift received, I will give back $10 in vouchers against any future ModRoomz purchase. If you give $10 you'll get $100 discount etc - it's that straight forward!

What's in it for me?

Once I reach or exceed my goal of $100k, everyone who contributed will receive a thank you email containing a discount code worth 10x times their original contribution. It'll be valid indefinitely and can be used against any ModRoomz product.

The only stipulation is that a maximum of 2 vouchers can be combined in any one future order; this just ensures I'm not giving ModCubes away at a loss!

So what's next?

I plan to begin by building to order, that is, I'll build every order as a customer places it. Once ModRoomz is off the ground and into full production, I'm going to offer ModRoomz to a wider audience, far beyond New England via a full ecommerce site and also through retailers and distributors.

To do this, I plan to ramp up production and offer delivery services in neighbouring states as well as nationwide delivery.

As I'm from England, I've also had a lot of interest over there and in Europe so the plan is to make ModRoomz available in Europe as soon as possible. We've also had a ton of interest in South America so I want to role it out there to.
