Moving the Mountain
Moving the Mountain (MtM) is a learning initiative, currently in the pilot project stage, which takes an integrated, holistic, and individualized approach to meeting the learning needs of vulnerable aboriginal youth engaged in high-risk behaviours.
First established in 2012 at Edmonton’s iHuman Youth Society in partnership with the Harvard University Native American Program, MTM moved to the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Education in late summer 2015.
I'm a physics student working in Moving the Mountain 3-4 hours each day as a volunteer Math and Science teacher. Engaging these youth in activities to enrich their lives and give them skills and tools to create a future is very important to me. This program will not be successful without resources, and unfortunately we have very few. These youth all deserve a fair chance at a safe life and a way off the streets. They deserve to learn the way they need to learn.
The traditional education system has failed these youth completely. We are dealing with illiteracy and low levels of general knowledge that have created an extremely difficult social cycle. I want to help break that cycle, uplift this population, and reform education.
Please consider donating to this project -- these kids deserve your support.
