Hi all,

Meet Gauri Didi. She lives in a 6 sq. meter tarp structure with her husband and two children in the slums of Rishikesh outside Muni-ki-Reti. Her deadbeat husband won’t work because he has “renounced society” and considers himself a baba.

Gauri has only one leg, and uses crutches to get around. Despite being the sole bread earner in the family, and having no job due to her handicap, she sends her two very brilliant children to a private school.

How does she make money?

Every morning, she makes her way to Laxman Jhula, five kilometers away from her home, and stands there with a bowl, smiling. She never ever asks for money, only stands there with the biggest smile on her face, never asking for money but simply accepting whatever any passerby might give.

What are we trying to do?

Gauri’s eleven year old daughter, Pooja, needs an MRI of the brain because she has recently started experiencing debilitating headaches that prevent her from attending school on most days. The MRI costs ₹12,000, nearly $200, and we’re trying to raise $250 for the MRI, follow-up appointments, and required medicines so that Pooja can go back to learning English and writing poetry, which she loves to do.

Why?

Because Gauri is one of the very inspiring women in Rishikesh, definitely one of the happiest people despite her decidedly difficult life. On some days, when she has some extra fruit lying around, she brings them for us. We visited her house to meet Pooja and left humbled by the gracious hospitality we received despite their destitute living conditions and scarcity of money. Pooja has no one to turn to except her handicapped mother, a courageous and resilient woman. We believe such women deserve all the support they can get.

How much to donate?

There’s no minimum, of course. Even one dollar is a huge help.

Thank you very much. ~ Namaste ~
