Will you help our friend and colleague Ashok Kumar?

Born in 1968 in Mysore district south India,  Ashok married his childhood love, Leela, without their communities' blessings. They lived a hard-working respectful life raising two daughters "Anu" Anita Kumari, and Priya.

As many of you know, Ashok's wife, Leela, died suddenly in 2016 after contracting Dengue and being mis-advised by the local health services.  It was a massive shock to Ashok and his daughters. Leela was head of the family as Ashok later said to me, "Leela was 90% my mother and 10% my wife".

The family's savings were exhausted after hosting the required ceremonies for the last rites of Leela and to give her a safe passage.

Another problem loomed.  Anu, who was 26 at the time, needed to announce her marriage within one year of her mother's passing (otherwise she would not be able to get married for three years making her too old in the eyes of the traditional Indian Hindu community).

The date of the wedding has been set for 6th November 2017. Ashok needs to raise a further 4 Lakhs Indian Rupees ($6,000) in addition of his own raised funds.

Savings, donations and his daughters' savings are currently 3 Lakhs Indian Rupees.

Ashok needs to raise a further 4 Lakhs Indian Rupees (which is approximately $6,000 USD) to pay the further costs of the marriage.

Ashok told me about Anu's wedding, and said that he would raise the money he needs to pay for it through a money-lender.  Like the majority of Indians, Ashok doesn't have a bank account, so he sees a money-lender (charging very high interest rates, often backed up by strong-arm tactics) as his only option.  With the interest rate being charged, Ashok would pay the interest monthly and the capital sum would NEVER be paid off.

Ashok is a proud man and won't accept a large gift, but he will be happy to accept smaller gifts of money from the people he has served and the friends he has made in our community over the years.  If you know Ashok and remember his constant smiles and kindness, please make a small donation, or larger if you can.  Ask your friends and family, as every little helps. Please help this special soul who has lived by the laws of his religion and his society and is trying his best as a single parent to give his daughters the "correct" marriage, starting with his older daughter, Anu.

Ashok says don't worry.  He will work every night as a security guard at an ATM to help repay the money-lenders... which would take around 10 years.

Please help to save Ashok's happiness and his dignity by donating just a few dollars.

"If you know Ashok, you know..."

I have written this to help Ashok as it is the only way I know to help him more than I already have without him losing his dignity.

Anyone in Mysore on the 6th November 2017 is welcome to join Anu's Marriage ceremony.

Wedding photos will be sent by email or Facebook to anyone who supplies their email or Facebook ID.
