Nepal Earthquake Rebuilding Fund
We have established a building fund for our knitters in Nepal. This is in response to requests for help from our community in Nepal, and the offer of help from concerned friends and business partners in the USA. Lost Horizons has been working in Nepal since 1985, assisting in the training and employment of Nepalese women as skilled artisans in the art of knitting. We are a member of the Fair Trade Federation of North America. We currently work with over 800 women, and have 8 workshops in the Kathmandu Valley. Women come to these workshops to learn new patterns, pick up wool, and deliver the finished hand-knit items. Some women knit together at the workshops, but most of the work is done at their homes.
The devastating earthquake in Nepal on April 18 has led to the deaths of over 5,000 people, countless injuries, and the damage and destruction of many neighborhoods and villages. It is a huge catastrophe in a very poor country, and requires an army of aid organizations to address even the basic needs of food, water, shelter, and medical assistance.
We are not an aid organization. Our mission in Nepal has always been to provide assistance to women by providing them with autonomy through the skilled and marketable trade of hand-knitting. Many of the 800+ women we work with have suffered tremendous loss, including damage and destruction of their homes. We are a small company and can only help so much, but we along with our partners in Nepal will assist them as much as possible. Our work in Nepal already supports these women with fair wages, emergency health care, and the education of their children. Our goal now is to raise funds to help repair and rebuild their homes, so they can have shelter for their families, a place to work, and a better chance to recover from this tragedy.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 from friends, family, business partners, and the knitting community to help repair and rebuild the homes of the women who hand-knit the beautiful sweaters and accessories for Lost Horizons.
• All funds will go directly to the removal of rubble, and the repair & rebuilding of homes. A close friend of ours is a structural engineer in Kathmandu with extensive connections in the local construction industry who will manage the projects for no charge.
• We will be providing updates with photographs of ongoing work to show our donors how their money is being spent. We will show you who is being directly benefited and how work is progressing.
• Lost Horizons will pay for any fees associated with the fund raising. We will ensure that every dollar donated reaches the repair and rebuilding projects in Kathmandu and the adjacent villages, where our knitters live.
• We are grateful for any amount you can contribute, or any Facebook “share” or “like” you can pass on, as we help rebuild lives by rebuilding homes.
