We are happy and surprised to reach our initial goal of 6500 USD! But our campaign is still going on and you can contribute until 8th of May 2015!

6500 USD is only a small part of what we actually need to help all of the 2000 people in Shyabru. Please support us! With your help we are able to do more! Thank you very much!

Short summary

We are raising funds to help the villagers of Old Shyabrubesi  to recover from the tragic situation!

The village called Shyabrubesi does not exist anymore.  All houses were destroyed during the earthquake that hit Nepal on the 25th of  April 2015. Shyabrubesi  is situated in one of the most affected areas of the earthquake.

We have been a part of their community since 2009. Working with local people, we have created there a community project, Social Bakery, which aimed to generate  income to support emergency needs of villagers. In 2013 our friend and a photographer, Martushka Fromeast, stayed in the village for 5 months – creating intimated photo stories on the spiritual life of the people in Shyabrubesi .

Many of our friends were injured during the earthquake on 25th of April. Due to lack of support so far, at least five people have died and we don’t know how many more may die in following days. We are getting desperate phone calls from them, begging for help. All the houses have been destroyed and people have been living  in open spaces to avoid landslides.  We are putting pressure on different local agencies to deliver immediate help but this is hopeless.

We have friends there with whom we were laughing, joking, gossiping, playing cards and sharing their worries. These people  always treated us like family. We have an obligation to help them.

We need your support to be able to help them now! Otherwise they will die there!

How will the raised funds be allocated?

·  food and drinking water

·  emergency equipment and medicine

·  blankets and tents for shelter

·  transportation of the injured

·  any other needs declared by the villagers

·  any remaining funds will be allocated to rebuilding the village infrastructure

We have a calculation how much we might need to be able to deliver first help to Shyabru:

·  around 20 tents: 1400 USD

·  solar battery, matches, candles: 700 USD

·  water purifiers: 300 USD

·  food and pottery: 1300 USD

·  cloths and blankets, cleaning supplies: 1100 USD

·  medicine, first aid kits: 500 USD

·  bank transfer cost: 200 USD

·  transport: 1000 USD

   TOTAL: 6500 USD

Why support this project?

Most of the international aid is getting to Kathmandu first. More remote areas receive it much later. Sometimes too late!

People from Shyabrubesi need our help right now!

Over the years of our involvement, we have seen the village realities. We have grown to admire its people and structure. We are keeping in touch with them at this moment. We know exactly what they need

About the village

Old Shyabrubesi is situated in Nepali Himalaya, in the entry to Langtang Valley. Its inhabitants are Tamang and Tibetan origins. Prior to disaster, there used to be 55 households in the village, mostly traditional old buildings as well as Tibetan Refugee Camp and Primary school. The village was situated off the main road at the start of the trekking to Langtang National Park. Getting there from Kathmandu in normal circumstances was 12-hours journey due to the road conditions.

About our previous projects in Shyabrubesi

Social Bakery

In 2010 Nyima Tamang, one of the villagers, set up Social Welfare Foundation Shyabrubesi to help the poorest people from the village. He came to an idea to build a social bakery, selling products to tourists visiting Langtang Valley, using whole the profit for the benefit of the community: purchase of medicines and school aids, domiciliary help etc.

In 2012 with a support of many people as well as Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Social Bakery was set up. During last 3 years we have successfully delivered a number of projects in local community (workshops for children, providing building materials for a new school, organizing homestay for tourists in the poorest families etc.).

Stories from Himalayas

The project aims to enhance and promote Himalayan heritage globally. In order to prepare in-depth photo narratives, we have activated local communities to produce pictures telling local stories.

“Stories from Himalayas” was conceptualised by Polish artist Martushka Fromeast (Marta Kotlarska) founder of Click Academy. The project was brought to life in 2013 with the idea of documenting Hindu Yatras (pilgrimages) in India and Nepal. During Martushka's 4 months artistic residency in Nepal in the Himalayan village of Syabru Bensi, the project flourished with first three stories from Himalayas: ‘Story of Gosaikunda’, ‘I am not afraid of the night’ and 'Se Bompo, Se, Se'.

The project was exhibited internationally (in New Delhi, Georgia, China, Nepal, Krakow, Warsaw and London) as well as won BZ WBK Press Photo 2014 competition in Poland.”

We became friends and decided to do something to develop their poor village and support its people. This is how the Bakery was established. Now they need our help once again!”
