Who We Are!

We are brothers with the love and passion putting together a destination spot to the Anime culture.  Michael & Stephen Ng, together, we put our strength and knowledge to open Ontario's biggest and first Manga Cafe, AKiBA KiSSA!  We have been long time fans to the culture ever since our childhood and have been attending local conventions collecting Manga and Anime figures since 2007.  During 2009, Stephen took the opportunity to fine tune his skills and knowledge as a barista at local cafes, eventually taking the role of Manager and became a semi-competitive Street Fighter IV player during the boom that year.  When I attended a Fighting Game tournament in Montreal and visited a French Manga Tea House, it gave me the idea of opening a Manga Cafe with my brother Mike.  We always wonder why Ontario doesn't have something similar when AnimeNorth draws in so many people in Canada and North America.  With our in depth knowledge in Anime, cafe and hospitality experience, we are confident in creating a place that Otaku can call their own!

Since 2008, we have been surveying the Anime community to better understand their interests and expectations of a Manga Cafe in Ontario.  After thorough research, site visits and unforeseen obstacles, we have kicked off AKiBA KiSSA with our Facebook page, announcing Ontario's first Manga Cafe, that will soon become a reality!

Promoting at the Industry Table at AnimeNorth 2015 was a huge success; and with the support of our fans, AKiBA KiSSA has now locked down its location in Markham to bring all the fans what they have long been waiting for:

• Manga Cafe service (Free WIFI)
• Regularly scheduled events for games, screenings, trading card games, cosplay nights and more!
• Local talent days for indie artists to showcase their masterpiece
• Storefront: Manga, art books, figures, toys and other collectibles

Our goal is to make AKiBA KiSSA a mini convention that will be open to everyone!

As owners of such an establishment, we believe that we have a responsibility to educate those interested in the culture as well; so rest assured, our staff has been personally picked out for their skill set and hospitality!

AKiBA KiSSA at AnimeNorth 2015!  We got to meet our fans that found out about us from our Facebook page and met many new Otaku wanting AKiBA KiSSA to open!

We would like to give our local community a place to call their own and to show the world that Ontario has a big enough scene and love for anime and everything related to it so that we can give it more exposure.

What We Need & What You Get

Successfully reaching the goal will completely change how community events and activities will be held.  We will have the appropriate change rooms for cosplayers, sturdier quality furniture, proper HVAC and the finished atmosphere we are aiming to show off for long term!

We carefully considered how we would like to thank our contributors and decided that the best way to show it is by giving you a preview of AKiBA KiSSA, whether it be with a sneak peak before we open, or even a package to come and see what we offer, all while having a drink on us!  These perks can make an excellent holiday gift idea for you and your friends!

No good deed goes unnoticed! The higher tier perks involve the local community, in which we want contributors to come by and leave their mark on our cafe by having a positive message or illustration left on our mugs and dessert plates to be forever seen and recognized by our customers.

The best part of the anime community is the creativity!  We will have 30 specialty mixed cold drinks available for our contributors to sample and the chance to name one of the drink of their choice; whether it be the name of an anime character or a phrase that describes the drink (e.g. "Notice me Senpai!")!  Contributors that take part in this perk will be credited on our menu underneath the drink's description!

For those who know they will become regulars, we have four different memberships, three dependent on your preference, and one being very exclusive to our Indiegogo campaign!

What we have in store for the community include the 4,000+ manga selection, various anime streaming stations, as well as regular scheduled events throughout the week!  Some of these events will include screening nights on the big screen able to accommodate 20 guests and Trading Card Game nights for the up and coming games such as CardFight!  Vanguard, Weiss Schwarz & Force of Will.  There will also be gaming nights featuring our specially made arcade cabinets, and our Wii U's for party gaming.  For those who enjoy cosplay, there will be cosplay nights and meets, as well as local artist days featuring artwork pieces from the artists in our community to display their work!

For a Manga Cafe as big as we are, we believe it is our sense of duty to support all activities that surround our culture, and we have shown this by sponsoring Canada Cup 2015 as one of our first contributions next to being involved with AnimeNorth 2015!

Risks & Challenges

We have come to the consensus that in order to be what we set out to be, a Central Hub for the Anime Community in Ontario, we have found the perfect spot doubling our ideal space of 4,700 sq ft (originally 2,500 sq ft).  Unfortunately, the previous establishment had set up their venue to accommodate a very different environment from what we are trying to set up here, which resulted in an unforeseen problem with the HVAC and central air unit set up.  The amount we’re aiming for is exclusively going into what we’re short of, which are the building’s necessities, whereas we have the budget for everything else covered for our start up.

My brother, our staff and myself are ready for this!  At our current state of this project, the only barrier we're encountering is something that is out of our power. We're aiming to provide a multi-functional location which will serve all the needs of the local fans and Otaku lifestyle!

This is the final stretch and we need your support in making this happen!  By successfully reaching our $50,000 goal, we will be able to provide appropriate change rooms for cosplayers, sturdier furniture , install proper HVAC and be on target with our grand opening.

Other Ways You Can Help

For those who are unable to contribute, there are other ways you can help:

  • We're not only aiming for the local community, but also for the AnimeNorth regulars outside the province or even the country that visit every Spring!  For those who use social media, you can spread the word via Facebook, Twitter, and word of mouth!  Getting the words out that Ontario will be opening a Manga Cafe will be a huge contribution to us!
