OPDL is an organization made for and by Haitian peasant farmers. Their organization grows by the idea of "starting with an egg". An egg by itself is gone quickly, but with the care of a community, it can grow to be a chicken, who can be cared for and can eventually produce more eggs and more wealth. In this way, the peasant farmers have been able to create wealth for themselves and are in the process of creating their own building as a headquarters, all with wealth the organization has amassed for itself through farming.
Your donation will go toward expanding the farm and purchasing new livestock for the organization. Every small donation counts, as much wealth can come from a small egg. I was lucky enough to visit the farm and gardens in Haiti along with a group of LMU students on an Alternative Breaks trip. It is amazing how much can be achieved with so little.
The aid donated to Haiti in the past has often been wrongly allocated and controlled by foreign groups and largely hurtful rather than beneficial for sustainable growth. You have the opportunity to make a donation that really goes to the people and will be controlled and utilized by Haitians for Haitians.
