UPDATE:

You helped raise $34,692 during the first round of voting (August 9 - September 9). These funds helped to purchase one of the four additional digital projectors awarded at the end of the contest. Your contributions directly helped keep one drive-in from going dark. Fundraising will continue through the end of the year to support more digital conversions.

Project Drive-in

THE PROBLEM:  An American icon is vanishing.

There are 368 drive-in theaters left in America. In less than 3 months, many of them will go dark forever if they cannot convert to digital projection. A digital projector can cost $85,000 plus installation, which most drive-ins cannot afford.

"… it would cost $85,000 to upgrade from 35 mm film to digital. We just don't make that kind of money.”

--- Drive-in owner, West Virginia

To upgrade from our 1962 model projector to digital projection would come at an estimated cost of $85,000 or more.”

--- Drive-in owner, Tennessee

Most of the profit’s made in the snack bar, because the movie company gets most of the ticket money, most people don’t realize that.”

--- Drive-in owner, Pennsylvania

THE GOAL:  Rally America to save as many drive-ins as possible.

Cars and Drive-ins go hand in hand. So who better to help save the drive-in than a car company? What better company than American Honda? Since 1933, these iconic outdoor screens have been built around car culture. Honda understands that the classic drive-in movie theater is an important part to our American heritage.
