Wow! We surpassed our goal within one day! Thank you so much to all who have contributed so far.
But it's not over yet! We still have perks left and every dollar counts. Let's see how far we can go!
You call yourselves EPIC. Who gives a hoot?
Pardon us for not introducing ourselves! Edmonton PotterWatch Institute for Charity (EPIC) here, partnering with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton (WRSE) to help keep some owls in the sky for the next few months.
EPIC works under the umbrella of the Harry Potter Alliance to make the events in our community accessible and relevant. For Project Hedwig, the link is apparent. Harry Potter loved owls, and so do we. And while they don't carry our post, they're still creatures that, on occassion need a little bit of help to keep them going. And that's where you come in.
Consider a donation. Owl love you forever.
We may not live at Hogwarts, and Albertan Owls aren't at risk of getting cursed by a stray Avada Kedavra, but our very own Hedwigs still need our help. And the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton is able to give it to them.
Birds make of 85% of the over 1000 animals taken in by WRSE each year. Owls are brought in for reasons ranging from being hit by a vehicle to getting contaminants on their feathers. And keeping one healthy and happy takes a bit more than a magic spell to help bring them back on their feet.
So, here's what you get for lending an owl a hand this winter:
- A chance to attend a live owl release. That's right - be physically present as we watch an owl fly back out into the wild. And then get video evidence to brag about it afterwards.
- Chances to win tickets to see Harry Potter: The Exhibition or tickets to see an Oil Kings game (in Edmonton)!
- General Admission tickets to the Telus World of Science in Edmonton
- A Harry Potter Book Necklace - a miniature copy of the Philosopher's Stone to carry around wherever you go. Careful about getting too attached though - these are not horcrux friendly!
- Owl poster. Go ahead and hang these beauties up next to that picture of Daniel Radcliffe you have hanging in your room. The owls'll feel right at home.
- An adorable crocheted snitch. Perfect for recreating any dreams of being a seeker. Please note that all flying that these snitches are capable of are entirely dependent on how hard you throw them.
- WRSE Swag - either a water bottle or a T-shirt. Show your love!
- J.K. Rowling's Owls - a presentation overviewing the owls that JKR mentions throughout the Harry Potter series, as well as the owls found in Edmonton and what the WRSE does to help them!
- A customized House Scarf, any house of your choosing! Wear your house colours with pride and stay warm this winter!
- A customized magic wand! Don't worry, we didn't pull a Voldy and kidnap Ollivander, but our local wandmaker will make any one wand to your exact specifications!
- And plenty more to come!
Hooo gets the money?
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton (WRSE) cares for injured, sick, orphaned, and oiled wild animals. In any one year, they care for over one thousand animals! Though most of these animals are birds, about fifteen percent of the animals are mammals.
This year, WRSE has taken in over 30 owls. Keeping one owl safe and fed costs about $75.00 per week, without the added costs of medications.
Every cent you donate goes straight to WRSE. For more information on how donations are used, send an e-mail to education@wildlife-edm.ca
