 RENT-BILLBOARDS-RAISE-AWARENESS-PROJECT

We are currently fundraising to rent billboards across Canada starting in Ontario that will empower the Canadian public with many of the truthful and important facts about our environment and the government that the media can't or won't provide. It is our hope is that a well informed public will pressure the government, the media, and the international oil and gas industries to:

  1.  Re-establish Canada's respect and protections for our environment
  2.  Prioritize more sustainable-earth business practices
  3.  Protect and respect everyones right to clean water, clean air and healthy   families
  4.  Begin to rebuild the Nation to Nation relatioship between First Nations and Canadians.

"We have a planetary emergency"

NASA scientist James Hansen

"Science today tells us that we have a generation at most in which to carry out a radical transformation in our economic relations, and our relations with the earth, if we want to ...avoid a major tipping point or “point of no return,” after which vast changes in the earth’s climate will likely be beyond our ability to prevent and will be irreversible"

  • We've reached the higest atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide  in 800,000 years, many countries including Sweden, Iceland, France and Germany have been attempting to reverse this increase by setting energy targets for themselves. The aim is to be oil-free in the not-to-distant future by utilizing things like geo-thermal heat, wind, solar, hydro and wave power. There is no relevant work being done in Canada to suggest that an oil-free goal is even being considered.

  • Germany is one of the few industrial nations to actually reduce its greenhouse gas emissions between 1990 and 2005 - by some 18 percent. Between 1990 and 2011 Canada's greenhouse gas emissions increased by a staggering 267 percent.

  • A study by engineers at Stanford Univeristy reports,"The biggest obstacles in shifting to clean energy are social and political — what you need is the will to do it."

  • In 2008, Alberta Health indicated a 31 per cent increase of cancers in the community of Fort Chipewyan (downstream from tar sands) and reports by Elders and community leaders document much more extreme environmental and community health changes, yet still a comprehensive study of health and environmental impacts has not taken place

  • Environmental toxins including carcinogens, gene mutagens, and endocrine disruptors have been poorly tracked by governments, despite widespread knowledge since the 1970s by the Department of Indian Affairs and Department of the Environment of both their existence and potential health impacts

  • Federal scientists confirmed that carcinogens from tar sands operations are traveling and accumulating in watersheds north of operations.

  • Dr. David Schindler at the University of Alberta: "It is clear that muzzling under the Harper government is the most oppressive in the history of federal government science. Incredibly, some of the most eminent scientists in Canada have been forbidden to speak publicly on scientific matters where they are recognized as world experts."

  • Canada has been repeatedly condemned by the United Nations for its treatment of Indigenous peoples

  • In Ontario, the Aamjiwnaang First Nation near Sarnia has been described as a ‘sacrifice zone’ and is considered the most polluted place in North America by the World Health Organization. Currently, an estimated 225 000 barrels per day (bpd) of tar sands are being processed in Sarnia, and the Line 9 reversal pipeline project will increase dilbit oil flow by 300 000 bpd

  • Several First Nations have launched lawsuits against governments and industry related to tar sands, asserting that the projects are illegal because in destroying local ecology, the projects violate First Nation’s constitutionally protected Treaty Rights to health, cultural traditions, and land/water integrity

  • In September 2012 the Harper government made public its intentions to terminate the Inherent Treaty rights of First Nations, and in December passed Bill C-45, which makes major changes to environmental legislation, labor laws, and the Indian Act. A recent Greenpeace access to information request revealed that Harper took direction from Big Oil in crafting Bill C45

  • Communities have not been given a choice about tar sands development, rather they have had to adapt to unabated expansion. Alternate economic visions based on ecologically and culturally sustainable industries have never been seriously considered. Rather, for communities downstream of projects, inflated prices on basic necessities like food, water, and hydro are the legacies of tar sands development. For those who harvest from the land to subsidize high food costs, the bioaccumulation of toxins in food and medicines has created serious health concerns, and forced many to abandon cultural traditions.

  • The Harper government has sabotaged international climate negotiations at the United Nations, and is the only country in the world to walk away from the Kyoto accord. NASA scientist James Hansen has argued that further exploitation of the tar sands means game over for the climate, yet the Harper government is ignoring facts in favor of an ideological economic vision of Canada as an ‘energy superpower.’

  • The ‘jobs’ argument for tar sands creates a fictitious division between the economy and the environment, attempting to pit employment against health and environmental concerns

  • Doing the actual math, it is an approximate net ratio of 20:1 jobs lost vs. jobs gained in chemical valley over a 15 year period

It costs approximately between $1400-$2000 to rent a large, horizontal billboard in Hamilton, Ontario for four weeks. We will start with the goal of one billboard and with your help we will achieve this, raise awareness and continue on raising funds for many more billboards, first in Ontario and then across Canada. If we raise more than our goal or if there is any money that does not cover more ad space, it will be donated to other Idle No More actions i.e. fundraisers, bus transportation for protesters, information distribution, etc.

Raising the consciousness of people to be more self-aware is part of our evolution.

"Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace." ~ Dalai Lama

"Indifference, to me, is the epitome of evil." ~Elie Wiesel, Jewish-American writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate, and Holocaust survivor.

Let's make it easy for people to not remain in the comfort of ignorance. The age of destruction, greed, indifference and inequality is coming to it's end. It's the end of that era and the beginning of a new one, a knowledgable one. Knowledge is true power.Truth is true freedom. Unity is true peace.

We are able to offer some some unique incentives to help encourage contributions to this campaign. T-Shirts and magnets featuring the beautiful artwork of artist Andy Everson for Idle No More. Also we have some one-of-a-kind wall and desk calendars featuring beautiful photos of Idle NO More protests world wide including New Zealand, Japan, Norway, Ecuador, Hawaii, Venice Beach, England, Australia, Germany, Italy and of a collage of Canadian cities with various empowering and inspiring quotes.

Even if you can't finacially contribute, please contribute by sharing this information with whoever you can, whenever you can.
