STRETCH GOAL!
We are so happy to know that this movie is funded and that we'll be able to tell this powerful story of a father's last adventure with his daughter.
Since we still have a few days left, we are going to try and make some upgrades to the production.
The first major improvement we can do is to bring a dedicated soundman with us. He's primed and ready to go, we just can't afford to get him there. If we can raise another $3,000.00 we can cover his airfare and food. Lodging cost should not rise, he likes sleeping on couches anyway.
Believe it or not, we are planning to employ many mics on this shoot between wireless lavs, shotgun boom, in-car audio recording, and on-camera mics. Having a dedicated sound person to record, monitor, and adjust as needed will ensure we get the cleanest audio we can and the other crew members can focus on what they need to be doing.
It would make a big difference, especially for a two week mobile shoot.
Stretch Target for Sound: $11,900.00
So, thanks for continuing to spread the word and helping us to make the best film we can.
Short Summary
Award winning SciFi author Jay Lake will be dead soon. He only has a few months left. His hope while battling cancer was that he'd at least live long enough to see his fifteen-year-old daughter's high school graduation. That will not happen.
Jay Lake has been the subject of a year long documentary called LAKESIDE. That film started following him early in 2012 as he was recovering from cancer and working on a new non-fiction book GOING TO EXTREMES, a book largely about parenting a teenager while battling a terminal disease.
That book included the hopes and plans to take his daughter to the extreme end of the earth: Antarctica
Three months into filming the documentary LAKESIDE, Jay's cancer returned. That film has now followed Jay from a happy and seemingly healthy point of his life to what will soon be the end of his life.
Jay has been declared terminal and is out of medical options. Jay has been at stage 4 for five years. He is now in the overtime period and is out of time outs.
What does a parent do knowing he has so little time left with his child? If that parent is Jay Lake, he says "F*** cancer" and books a trip to New Zealand, the one place his daughter always wanted to visit.
Jay has planned a two week expedition with his daughter across New Zealand, including visits to amazing locations like a steampunk town; geological wonders; and ending with a private Lord of The Rings tour of sites including Hobbiton.
This will be their final adventure together.
We want to film this trip for a stand-alone documentary about a father's goodbye trip with his daughter.
How does he tell her everything he wants to tell her? How does she tell him everything she needs to tell him?
How will Jay's cancer affect the trip?
This film will document their two-week road trip from Christchurch to Auckland with all the stops in between.
THIS TRIP IS SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 1-AUGUST 14 2013 (in about a month).
We have kept this campaign short becuase of the immediacy of the need. Plane tickets rise dramatically as the date approaches.
What We Need & What You Get
The funds raised in this campaign will go to the following expenses directly:
- airfare
- lodging
- fuel for 1,500 mile roadtrip
- food
- entrance/ filming fees for approximately 20 locations
We have all the equipment (Sony PMW-F3 and four smaller cameras, GoPro, wireless lav microphones, batteries, international power adapters) we need. This campaign will simply cover operational expenses during filming.
Everyone who contributes to this campaign will be thanked at the end of the film and on the official website (yet to be developed).
The target amount of this campaign will enable this film to happen. Any overages will poured into improving the documentary even more.
The Impact
We cannot make this film without your support. Funding will finance sending a film crew from Austin, Texas to New Zealand for two weeks, editing and basic post-production.
This is literally a make it or not campaign. We have opted for flex funding in case we miss our target by just a few dollars we can still try to make it.
This trip has only just been announced and was decided and planned very quickly. Because of this and the state of Jay Lake's health and life expectancy, there are no options to delay or reschedule this trip.
As the filmmakers of LAKESIDE, we have the access, consent, and support of the subjects of this documentary. We have both a good personal and professional relationship with Jay and the Lake family.
Jay has invited us to film and we are working directly with his support team in New Zealand. http://www.jlake.com/2013/06/26/travelevents-fo...
