Our Story

Laura Short and Krystin Tschacher Leonhardt, two organizers from The World Wide Anti Whaling protestors, are asking for your help to keep awareness world's eye on Taiji. We are driven by our love for our oceans and the respect of the animals within. This January 2011, we are heading to Taiji, Japan to document and try to stop the inhumane killing of whales and dolphins. We hope to be there from January 2-12. But we need your help! We are seeking donations to help fund our trip. It's not a nice trip and certainly won't be a vacation. We are a team of 2 who are dedicated to around the clock observation and documentation of the events that will take place at the cove.

The Impact

Why do you care?

You care because this is our only Earth. And these are our only animals. We are supposed to take care of them as they take care of us. We aren't supposed to murder them. They give us so much beauty and wonder. They give us a look at the areas we aren't meant to go into naturally-our oceans. Dolphins and whales are like us in so many ways. They live in pods, they have an advanced language, and they understand death. Cetaceans play an important role in maintaining ecosystem health and fisheries. Dolphins - like many other high-level predators, prey mainly on old and ill fish. This way they are playing an important role in fighting infectious diseases among fish populations and ensure the reproduction of fisheries resources. It has been proved in many studies that the elimination of top predators in marine systems has negative, cascading effects for the entire ecosystem. By killing dolphins, we are killing the sanitary police of the oceans, which may result in more diseases and diminished fish populations. To kill a dolphin, therefore, means to directly damage sustainable fisheries.

What We Need & What You Get

We are paying for most of this out of our own pockets. We don't have to go but with the proven continued presence of other organizations in Taiji, the count of dolphin and whale killings hasn't reached triple digits yet. The fishermen plan to kill close to 2,000 by April. With your help, we can prevent them from reaching that goal. We can keep pregnant dolphins alive! We can keep babies from being orphaned. We can keep families together. And we can fight the almighty Yen.

What do you get?

You will receiver postcards from Taiji. You will also receive photos and video of the events. We will be documenting everything! We hope to be there for 10 days. That's a lot of footage and photographs. You will also receive a rubber bracelet with our initials, WWAWD. Your name will also go in a section on our website as a way to say thank you for helping to support our trip. Because without you, we wouldn't be able to go. So you deserve some recognition as well!

Other Ways You Can Help

There is another way you can help if you do not feel comfortable donating money. We've set up a store with T-shirts that you can purchase from. We wanted to keep the price pretty reasonable so we've only raised the base price by $1.00. Yes only $1.00. For each item sold, the WWAWD receives only $1.00. You can view our store at http://printfection.com/worldwideantiwhalingday

Thank you so much for your time and we hope to make this trip!
