Hi!
We are SCRAP DC. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to
inspire creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing
educational programs and affordable materials to the community. Essentially, we take
stuff that people aren’t using (you know, that fuzzy orange material you bought
to make a Halloween costume with four years ago, the left over wedding
invitation envelopes that only came in packs of 1000), save it from being
clutter, compost—or worse—just trash, and get it in to the hands of people who
will put it to good use.
So
far SCRAP DC has diverted 5 tons of materials from the waste stream. We currently have a retail
space, sewing lounge and workshop room at 3101 12th Street NE in
Brookland DC run completely by volunteer power. We offer classes where folks can learn new skills and we have
creative birthday parties. We encourage stewardship of
the earth, nurture creativity, create community, and on a more
tangible level, give folks the high of finding a good deal.
We’re doing
this indiegogo campaign because we envision a SCRAP that’s even more
comprehensive. We want to have a gallery space to exhibit the work of creative
reuse artists, we want to outfit our workshop room with specialty tools like
dremmels, punches, rotary cutters, and printmaking presses and we want to
improve our fixtures and shelving to make supplies even more accessible and
easier to find.
You can
help us turn SCRAP DC in to creative reuse headquarters! Make a donation, use us as your Go-To for
creative endeavors and tell your friends.
Creative Reuse Headquarters
In August 2013 SCRAP DC moved from a less than 250 square foot basement studio to a 2000 square foot building (with windows!) on a busy street corner. We are 8 times bigger than what we were. And our rent is 8 times as expensive. We made a big leap because we love creative reuse and want to see it thrive in greater greater DC. All that to say...we need your support!
Here's where the $5000 goes:
$3000 = 3 months rent for the workshop room (where classes are held, ideas
are brought to life, people inspire each other, brainstorm sessions abound)
$1000 = Shelving upgrades and improvements (more organization=more
donations=more awesome stuff for you to get inspired by)
$500 = Art Hanging Rails to transform the Lobby in to a Gallery (found objects,
DIY demos, incredible transformations....all things good on display!)
$500 = Tools! And other fun things to create with and learn from

Reuse is Sexy
In the spring our Advisory Board got together for a visioning day. We had a whiteboard wall and by the end of the day it looked like this:

We think creative reuse has big implications. Actually, HUGE implications for economics, community, culture, education, environmental impact, personal empowerment, behavior, ethics...the list goes on. When you support SCRAP you're supporting more than a place to get cheap materials. You are becoming part of the creative reuse movement. SCRAP DC is part of SCRAP USA (there are 5 SCRAPs across the country!) and a member of the Reuse Alliance, a nonprofit that educates the public about social, environmental and economic benefits of reuse. Supporting SCRAP makes a cultural impact. It's validating the choice to
reuse and create a culture that celebrates reuse as a legitimate, exciting and, for some, preferred way of
consuming. It's telling the world that reuse is sexy!
