We made our goal - but we still need your help!
We are awed and humbled by your incredible generosity! Thank you so much for helping us reach our goal. We are still accepting funds for bringing more women to the Audio Engineering Society Convention in Los Angeles to attend the convention and help at the WAM booth. Any extra funds we raise will be used to:
- Bring more women down to the AES convention
- Support Girls on the Mic, WAM's youth program, which serves over 650 underserved girls ages 11-18 a year by providing them with free music production and recording arts training in a professional studio environment, and provides girls with musical instruments, recording gear,
access to young women mentors, and exposure to career opportunities in music production and the recording arts.
What is WAM?
Women's Audio Mission is a San Francisco-based, non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of women in music production and the recording arts. In a field where women are critically under-represented (less than 5%), WAM seeks to "change the face of sound" by providing hands-on training, experience, career counseling and job placement to women and girls in media technology for music, radio, film, television and the internet. WAM believes that women's mastery of music technology and inclusion in the production process will expand the vision and voice of media and popular culture.
The Audio Engineering Society Convention (AES) is a big deal in our world - it's the largest gathering of audio professionals in the world, with over 18,000 attendees, uniting engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide. It's also the biggest event for us to reach out and connect with women in the industry.
WAM has attended the conference every year since 2004. AES generously donates a booth to us every year, so we can provide a place for women to connect, network, and get hooked into WAM's programs and services. But first we have to make it down to Los Angeles.
Why is it critical that WAM attend this year's conference in Los Angeles?
- The WAM Booth provides a critical "homebase" for women attendees to meet, connect, and network with other women and industry professionals;
- AES is the best event for us to reach the largest amount of women in audio and get them involved in WAM's programs and services, increasing their chances of graduating from audio programs and getting into audio careers;
- For new women audio students, AES can be intimidating - WAM provides students with a gateway into the conference, offering student-tailored guides, tips, career/educational guidance, and encouragement;
- Over 14,000 WAM supporters, members, and women in audio will be connected to the 137th AES Convention through WAM's social media channels full of updates, videos, and tech coverage from the conference!

The Impact
As it stands, women make up less than 5% of audio engineers. There has been an alarming decline in girls enrolling in college STEM
programs (79% decrease since 2000). Girls are falling behind and are prevented
from entering the critical educational pipeline that leads to leadership and
innovation positions in the audio industry, music production, and the recording arts.
WAM's presence at the Audio Engineering Society Convention is essential for bringing more women into studios, behind the board, behind the scenes of records, films, games, and media, and making content decisions. WAM is the only organization in the world providing this training specifically for women and girls and the only organization representing women audio professionals at the AES convention.
Women who have connected with us through previous AES conventions have:
- Been placed in audio jobs;
- Become WAM interns;
- Received critical training both online and in-person;
- Made important connections to other women audio professionals, industry professionals, manufacturers;
- Received internship and paid opportunities;
- Attended WAM-moderated panels exposing them to successful women industry professionals in studio recording, live sound, film sound, and more;
- Expressed feeling a sense of community, support, guidance, and encouragement by seeing WAM at AES.
If you haven't yet watched our Indiegogo video posted above, check it out, as you will hear directly from young women who have been impacted by WAM's presence at the AES convention.
