The story

The film SILKBOX, riding a long psychogeographic drift, opens a box full of daily life stories settled in the crowded and multicultural neighbourhood of Metaxourgeio-Kerameikos in the centre of Athens. Metaxourgeio took its name by the silk (“μετάξι” in Greek) factory which was operating in the area from 1854 since 1875. It is a landscape with its own architectural contrasts, where people from different cultural and social background coexist in an unpredictable urban space full of memories and contradictions. The common denominator of these singulars daily life stories is the organization of the carnival. A ritual of revolt, self-organized on an horizontal platform by the neighbourhood for the neighbourhood, with solidarity as budget and happiness instead of profit. In a time when the illusion of the future is broken we are forced to focus on the present, finding happiness through common support, starting taking back an old tool, solidarity. The people through the mask, an apotropaic medium, reconnect with their own psychic roots, repossessing the full individual responsibility of their destiny.
Τhe carnival, which brings the echo of Dionysian Times, reverses the established cultural system, at the same time it depicts in a metaphorical way the gradual metamorphosis of Metaxourgeio’s character.

Η ιστορία

Το ντοκιμαντέρ SILKBOX μας παρασύρει σε ένα μακρύ ψυχογεωγραφικό περίπατο και ανοίγει ένα κουτί γεμάτο καθημερινές ιστορίες της συνωστισμένης και πολυπολιτισμικής γειτονιάς του Κεραμεικού-Μεταξουργείου στο κέντρο της Αθήνας, ένα τοπίο γεμάτο αρχιτεκτονικές αντιθέσεις, όπου οι άνθρωποι συνυπάρχουν σε ένα αντιφατικό και απρόβλεπτο περιβάλλον. Οι ιστορίες που ξεδιπλώνονται έχουν ως κοινό σημείο αναφοράς την οργάνωση ενός καρναβαλιού στην περιοχή αυτή, ένα τελετουργικό εξέγερσης, με οριζόντια οργάνωση, από τη γειτονιά για τη γειτονιά, με εφόδιο την αλληλεγγύη αντί του οφέλους και την ευτυχία αντί του κέρδους. Σε μια εποχή εξαιρετικά αβέβαιη για το μέλλον, αναγκαζόμαστε να επικεντρωθούμε στο παρόν βρίσκοντας την ευτυχία μέσω της κοινής υποστήριξης και της αλληλεγγύης. Οι άνθρωποι μέσω της μάσκας, ένα αποτροπαϊκό μέσο, επανασυνδέονται με τη ψυχή τους κι επανακτούν την πλήρη ατομική τους ευθύνη.
Το καρναβάλι, το οποίο αντηχεί τις διονυσιακές εορτές, αντιστρέφει το καθιερωμένο πολιτιστικό σύστημα την ίδια στιγμή που αναπαριστά τη σταδιακή μεταμόρφωση του χαρακτήρα του Μεταξουργείου.

Why our film is important and different?

The documentary tries to capture a different view of everyday life in Athens in the time of social unrest. By having a carnival in the epicenter, SILKBOX focuses on a creative and positive reaction of a community in the neighbourhood of Metaxourgeio, reversing the stereotypical media-clichés. From the perspective of an insider we come across different characters from different social and cultural background bonded together by the charm of the neighbourhood. However, this carnival is a metaphor which shows the process of metamorphosis of the neighbourhood which is not immune to the broader social changes.

Γιατί είναι σημαντικό το ντοκιμαντέρ μας σήμερα και πώς διαφοροποιείται;

Το ντοκιμαντέρ προσπαθεί να αποτυπώσει μια διαφορετική οπτική της καθημερινής ζωής στην Αθήνα σε μία εποχή κοινωνικά ταραγμένη. Με επίκεντρο το καρναβάλι, το SILKBOX εστιάζει σε μία δημιουργική και θετική αντίδραση μίας κοινότητας ανθρώπων στη γειτονιά του Μεταξουργείου, ανατρέποντας τα στερεοτυπικά κλισέ των μέσων ενημέρωσης. Μέσα από μια κινηματογραφική περιπλάνηση, συναντάμε χαρακτήρες, διαφορετικών κοινωνικών και πολιτισμικών υπόβαθρων, που έρχονται κοντά μαγεμένοι από τη γοητεία της γειτονιάς. Ωστόσο, αυτή η καρναβαλική μεταμόρφωση υποδεικνύει και μια γειτονιά που δεν μένει, με τη σειρά της, αμετάβλητη από τις γενικότερες κοινωνικές αλλαγές.

What we need is your support!

The shooting of the documentary started on January, 2014. After 3 years it comes to an end as only the 20% of the film remains to be completed. Such a time length was needed to get to the core of the topic securing a deep and honest approach. Now, we need your support in order to complete the shooting, to reward all SILKBOX crew, who during all these years, has dedicated with passion their personal time and talent to the film. Moreover, the procedure of the editing is expected to be particularly demanding due to the rich recorded material. It's important to us to support our editor in the hard work she will undertake immediately after the shooting is finished.

To conclude, through this campaign we need to gather the amount of 5000 € in order to cover the direct expenses of the documentary, the remaining shooting and the editing.

Τα γυρίσματα του ντοκιμαντέρ ξεκίνησαν τον Ιανουάριο του 2014 και 3 χρόνια μετά φτάνουν στο τέλος τους καθώς απομένει το 20% της ταινίας για να ολοκληρωθεί. Χρειάστηκε αρκετός χρόνος για να προσεγγίσουμε τον πυρήνα του θέματος, διαβεβαιώνοντας μία βαθιά και ειλικρινή προσέγγιση. Τώρα θέλουμε την υποστήριξή σας ώστε να τελειώσουμε τα γυρίσματα, να ανταμείψουμε όλους τους συντελεστές, οι οποίοι, όλα αυτά τα χρόνια, αφιέρωσαν με πάθος τον προσωπικό τους χρόνο και ταλέντο στο ντοκιμαντέρ. Επίσης, η διαδικασία του μοντάζ για το ντοκιμαντέρ μας αναμένεται να είναι ιδιαίτερα απαιτητική εξαιτίας του πλούσιου καταγεγραμμένου υλικού. Είναι αναγκαίο για εμάς να υποστηρίξουμε τη μοντέρ μας για το δύσκολο έργο που θα αναλάβει αμέσως μετά την ολοκλήρωση των γυρισμάτων.

Συνεπώς, μέσω της καμπάνιας μας χρειαζόμαστε να συγκεντρώσουμε το ποσό των 5000 € έτσι ώστε να καλύψουμε τα άμεσα έξοδα του ντοκιμαντέρ, δηλαδή της ολοκλήρωσης των γυρισμάτων και του μοντάζ.
