UPDATE: We've met our goal for Snowball... but can we cover Biscuit's dental too?
THANK YOU ALL for the wonderful support! We made our stated goal of $1000 to cover Snowball's surgery in 14 hours! That is 100% amazing! We couldn't do it without the dedicated support of kind people like you.
House of Dreams is a small shelter... but you'd think we were much bigger by the size of our medical bills. You see, we are a sanctuary for cats that didn't have anywhere else to go. We specialize in senior cats and cats with ongoing medical conditions. Fully half of our capacity is dedicated to cats that test positive for feline leukemia.
And we do remarkable work in not only caring for these cats but also placing them in the one in a million home that is the perfect fit for a special needs animal. Before anyone adopts any cat from House of Dreams we make sure they have the best medical treatment and are in the best shape possible. Take Biscuit for instance:
Just this past weekend there was a party that showed some interest in possibly giving her that one in a million home. But we know she needs some dental work done before we'll let anyone take her home (dental work totaling almost as much as Snowball's surgery). And she's not the only one...
So please keep donating and please keep sharing on Facebook and Instagram and Twitter. Every dollar you donate will ensure that Snowball gets her surgery and that all the other cats in House of Dreams will continue to get the best medical care we can give them.
We always knew Snowball was unique but this is ridiculous!
Hi, my name is Snowball and the kind humans of House of Dreams had been taking care of me for almost 4 years before I surprised them by going into heat last spring. They told me it shouldn't happen (I'd been spayed way back in 2011 and never gone into heat before) but my little body had a mind of it's own. It was uncomfortable for me and it made the other cats at the shelter uncomfortable too.
The kind humans took me to the doctor and tried to figure out why I was going into heat when I shouldn't. Luckily the season ended and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief. Whew! I was so glad to be past it!
But we've spoken too soon: in Feb. 2016 I went back into heat. Not again! This is so uncomfortable! I can't help yowling and disturbing all the other cats. I'm sorry, everybody! I can't help it!
I need to go to a specialist who can help me. It's likely a tiny bit of ovarian tissue left inside me. The kind human have already scheduled my surgery for next month (March 2016) and I'll be so grateful when I can put this all behind me. Can you help me get the surgery I need?
House of Dreams is a non-profit, no-kill cat shelter
House of Dreams is a 501 (c)(3) cat shelter in Portland, Oregon. We provide shelter and care for abandoned and homeless cats, with the goal of finding them permanent homes or providing them a lifetime home in our facility. We are Portland’s only free-roam, no-kill cat shelter, and one of the only area shelters with facilities for Feline Leukemia positive cats.
All of the kitties at House of Dreams are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and receive any medical care needed; be it special foods, medications, or medical procedures. We are an all volunteer organization and all funds received go directly to the care of the cats.
House of Dreams was formed in April 1999, when 5 volunteers took over an existing shelter that was closing. There were 97 cats living in the shelter at that time; those 5 original volunteers saved those kitties and founded what we now know as House of Dreams.
Who we are:
- No kill - All cats who find their way to us have found a safe home for the rest of their natural life.
- Free roam - Our residents roam freely in large, unconfined spaces customized for their needs.
- All volunteer - We have no paid staff. We have about 50 active volunteers who clean the shelter and medicate, feed and socialize the cats and an additional 40-50 who contribute outside the shelter (at outreach events, craft fairs, fundraisers, etc).
- Non-profit - We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible and go directly to the care of the cats.
- Special needs - We are one of a small number of US shelters to provide sanctuary for Feline Leukemia positive cats. Our mission includes expert ongoing care for cats living with varied medical issues.
