Short Summary

• Kosrae, Micronesia is a remote volcanic island located just 400 miles north of the equator in the western Pacific ocean, and is the home of Kosrae Nautilus Resort, a 16 room boutique Resort and scuba dive operation that opened for business 19 years ago when electricity on this tiny island cost just 5 cents/kWh, with recent electricity costs rising to 62 cents/kWh (you probably pay between 5 to 20 cents).

• We want to install a 40 kilowatt solar installation (around 160 solar panels), and if possible, do it without borrowing any of the money.

• This project should cut the current $7,000 to $8,000 per month electricity bill in half, which will go a long way to relieving this monthly strangle hold on the businesses cash flow.

What We Need & What You Get

• The cost for a system like this will be around $60,000 installed. In our location there are no rebates available for installing alternative energy. We have approached several Embassies and other agencies in and around Micronesia, asking for financial help with the costs of the solar panel system, but with no luck. So here we are now, asking help from the rest of the world.

  NB the first Vacation and Dive package sold out in a week, mainly to guests who have stayed and dived with us before, as they know how good the diving is in Kosrae. We have added another 10 of these packages, and they are for 2 people, the price is not per person (yes it is a fantastic deal), so be quick, as we have had a lot of interest via email in this package.

• We have been talking to our bank, and they have agreed in principal to help fund this project, so even if we don't reach our goal of funding it without borrowing, your contributions will still be used to fund the project. It's definitely going ahead, as either way, we can't afford not to do it.

The Impact

• Most people want to “green the world”, and so do we. This huge increase in electricity costs have now made us face this full on and do a lot of research into alternative energy, along with reducing our energy needs.
• Five years ago we installed seven solar water heaters, and last year we switched most of our restaurant kitchen over to propane. This has helped a lot, but our $7000 to $8000/month electricity bill persists, and all of our research tells us that solar panels are our next step.
