Overview
Help me exhibit my artwork and story about growing up as a confused queer youth at a gallery in San Antonio, TX!

Howdy!

I'm Joshua McDevitt, a photographer, artist, and recent MFA recipient from The University of Iowa. Since graduating, I have moved to Louisiana to be with my partner and received the wonderful opportunity to present my work at Clamp Light Artist Studios and Gallery in San Antonio, TX during the annual Fotoseptiembre USA international photography festival! This will be my very first solo exhibition outside of the institution, and a huge first step for my career as a contemporary artist. I am absolutely thrilled to share my story with the public, but I need some help. I have already spent well over $1000 out of my own pocket to frame and exhibit this work for my thesis exhibition at Iowa and, especially after making a big move, I need all the help I can to get it up on the wall again.

This exhibition is so important to me as I intend to create a dialogue that will invoke an understanding and empathy for the LGBTQ community through a personal and relatable narrative - as well as reach out to those who may have or are still struggling. It is such an honor to have an invitation from a gallery in Texas, where the LGBTQ community constantly fights for their equal rights.

Exhibition Statement

Western societal mores come with expectations such as gender roles, heteronormativity, masculinity in boys, and femininity in girls. The way we think about gender has a long list of deeply embedded microaggressions: “don’t be a girl”, “man up”, “she’s a bitch”, “that’s gay”. The list goes on, including less obvious phrases and actions. What exactly do they mean? And upon reflection, how do they confuse an adolescent trying to define their gender or sexuality?

“But I’m nothing, if I can’t be me. If I can’t be true to myself, they don't mean anything.” - K.W.

ATTENTION: I believe if you want to collect one of these perks, you must click "Get This Perk" from the sidebar. Those who want to donate their own amount will still be thanked at the exhibition if the contribution exceeds $10. (You can only donate the amount for the chosen perk. However, you can donate again if you wish to contribute more).

Challenges

Getting to the gallery! The opening reception will be held on September 9th. At least half of the expenses for this exhibition consist of gallery fees and the cost of travel, which in this case is much cheaper than shipping the art!

This exhibition will happen. Your kind donations help reimburse me so that I can eat and pay my bills, because I am not guaranteed to make any money off of my art.
