The Solocam Story
![]()
Photography as we know it has changed drastically since cellphones were equipped with cameras. One of the major innovations that the cellphone camera has been responsible for is the "selfie," which has become a large part of picture-taking norms in the modern world.
For the past several years, the Solocam team has been searching for a way to create top quality videos with non-professional equipment.
When the team first created the forerunner of the current Solocam, which was comprised of a microphone connected to a selfie stick with black electrical tape, they realized what was missing from the selfie sticks that are currently on the market: the technology and the hardware to link smartphones to external microphones, in order to improve sound quality. The team then went about trying to create a way to film with a smartphone, while matching sound quality to the sharpness of the video quality provided for by today’s improved camera technology.

Solocam may have drawn its inspiration from the selfie stick, but in the process of its creation, the team had to reinvent the design and purpose of the selfie stick as we know it, to make the Solocam stronger, more stable, and more comfortable to use. The team also had to create technology specifically designed to complement its functions.
