WHY ARE WE DOING THIS INDIEGOGO?
You might be familiar with - or maybe even already generously donated to - the previous STORYTELLERS crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter. If that's the case, you're probably wondering why we need an additional $20,000! Unfortunately, 44% of the Kickstarter pledges were rendered invalid, and we only received $80,000 from the supposedly fully-funded campaign. This puts us $20,000 short of our proposed $100,000 budget.
We are initiating this Indiegogo campaign not only in order to hopefully maintain the quality of the episodes as planned, but also to give everyone who missed out on the exclusive rewards and perks the first time around a second opportunity!
WHAT IS THE SERIES ABOUT?
STORYTELLERS is Skins meets Are You Afraid of the Dark? – the summer before they leave for college, a group of unlikely friends gathers around a campfire to tell scary stories, and what begins as joking fun grows steadily more frightening. As the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, our group of storytellers ultimately discover more than they bargained for about their world...and each other.
Part coming-of-age story and part episodic horror series with plenty of light touches of comedy, STORYTELLERS plays with familiar tropes and archetypes in fresh, unexpected ways. Following a Skins-esque format, the series will have seven episodes, with each of the first six centering around a specific member of the group, leading up to a final episode bringing all of them—and their stories—together.
Each character’s story arc is constructed with a different horror ‘type’ in mind:
HUNTER CROWLEY (supernatural abilities) – Likable, outgoing, and charismatic, Hunter is a natural leader, and more powerful than even he realizes.
MAI HIMURA (curses and enchantments) - Shy, sweet Mai has always lived in her best friend’s shadow, but there are different kinds of shadows in her family’s past.
SKYLER EVANS (ghosts and possession) - Skyler is the kind of gorgeous popular girl everyone loves to hate, but there’s more to her icy shell than meets the eye.
FINN SHAH (fear and insanity) – Quirky aspiring filmmaker Finn starts out as a bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to scary stories—and, well, life. Let's just say he doesn't stay that way for long...
BLAZER WALLACE (paranormal sci-fi) - The only thing anyone really knows about rebellious outsider Blazer is his name—and even that’s questionable. Exactly what sort of secrets is he hiding?
CELIA CROWLEY (fairytales and wishes) – Hunter’s little sister is a rising senior and the youngest member of the group. Celia’s an idealistic dreamer, but dreams can far too easily turn to nightmares.
MEET THE CREATIVE TEAM
HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN!
The costs of creating a sleek, exceptional original web series add up fast - from casting top-tier talent to acquiring a crew of industry professionals (and all the equipment they require to excel at their jobs) to nailing down sets, props, and costumes to paying for a host of post-production costs including visual effects, editing, and music. We aspire to create the highest-possible-quality entertainment for you guys, and we need YOUR help to do it!
We are currently in pre-production, with the episode scripts written and production scheduled to begin in July 2013, leading up to an expected October 2013 release date. Only your support and generosity can ensure we're able to move to the next stage of making this series happen, so we've come up with over two dozen fun rewards and prizes to get you excited and to show our appreciation!
We want YOU involved in this creative process from beginning to end - through donations starting at just $1, you can join our mailing list to stay updated on shoots and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks, attend our VIP premiere and wrap party, name a character, or even have us fly you out to Los Angeles this summer to film a walk-on-role in the series!
We believe whole-heartedly that YouTube is the most cutting-edge creative frontier for original content creators interested in inspiring and supporting each other while connecting directly with their audiences, trailblazing new and innovative ways of telling stories.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us tell this one. ♥
Special thanks to Jordan Harriman for lending us his amazing DP skillz and equipment; Kris Sundberg for the awesome visual effects; Michael Wormser for being the best line producer a team could ask for; and Luke Conard for recording the voiceover and letting us set his backyard on fire (JK!)
A FEW OF OUR RISKS & CHALLENGES
Making a professional TV-quality series on such a tight budget is a huge undertaking. Our team will be putting their blood, sweat and tears into making it great... But aside from the occasional favor, EVERYTHING costs money: insurance, locations, permits, actors, food, cameras, crew, wardrobe, special effects, editing, score, etc.
An example: one of our episodes involves dangerous physical stunts. Without the proper funding, we would lack the budget to afford the essentials to ensure safety and therefore be putting our performers at risk.
With your donations, we will be able to ensure that everything in STORYTELLERS is done legally and professionally, adding up to an amazing series made possible by YOU.
Thank you for believing in us and our passion project!
