Pop Up Kampala

Pop Up is a social entrepreneurship-based cafeteria that empowers Uganda's disabled youth by offering them their first job opportunity. The cafeteria was started by two visionary volunteers from Estonia together with NGO Mondo and the start-up money was gathered from the people of this small North-European nation, donation by donation. The official opening was held on the 13th of October (in Kampala and in Tallinn simultaneously via Skype) after which the volunteers and employees have been working hard to make the cafeteria profitable. The food and coffee we offer is amazing and the ambience is so homey that you will want to stick around for a bit longer, maybe to have a chess game or to watch a movie with the people from the neighbourhood. But still much work remains to be done until we reach profit and until then we need your help!

Why is this important? Imagine to yourself that you are a disabled young (wo)man in Uganda, full of enthusiasm and a wish to earn your own living, to become self-sufficient and independent. Then imagine how hard it is to earn a living in a country where disabled people are still often not seen as equal human beings. Help Pop Up Kampala so that the six amazing youth who work there can hold their head up high, as they are the true pioneers and visionaries who will make the world a better and happier place, one well-fed client after another. Help Pop Up Kampala because everyone deserves a chance to become independent.

We are happy for every little donation and contribution, your help will make a big difference in the lives of the employees and volunteers in Pop Up Kampala.

What Pop Up Needs

At the moment Pop Up is earning loss. In the beginning of April, a new volunteer from Estonia will travel to Kampala to start a marketing campaign. The goal is to make the cafeteria profitable by June 2013. Until then, there is a 2000 EUR (2675 USD) gap in the budgetHelp us raise 500 USD of this gap, a sum that would help us:

  • Finance the free WiFi connection we offer in Pop Up (we are the only free Wi-Fi spot in the whole neighborhood!)
  • Partly finance our water, electricity, and garbage disposal costs
  • Partly finance our rent costs

What Your Contribution Will Mean

Pop Up was born out of the urgency and need to foster the social and economic development of persons with disabilities in Kampala, Uganda. With your help, Pop Up will keep on going until it becomes self-sufficient, a goal which we all look forward to, as all the profit that Pop Up makes goes directly to the disabled young people who work there and to the community that surrounds Pop Up.

This will mean:

  • Empowerment and independence for disabled youths
  • Support for the community and families of the youths

Other Ways You Can Help

There are several other ways you can help Pop Up besides financial contributions.

First of all - come visit us in Kampala! You will find us in the district of Ntinda, on Mutesa 2 Road, 161. We guarantee great coffee and an awesome atmosphere.

Secondly, if you are a marketing expert desperately looking for some pro-bono work, we would much appreciate your know-how.

And if you are not going to be in Kampala soon or have no interest in marketing, feel more than welcome to share, like, tweet this campaign. Or why not just talk to your friends about this awesome project you just discovered on indiegogo?
