Short Summary
The African People & Wildlife Fund's scholarships give the Maasai Steppe's best and brightest children the chance to receive a private secondary school education.
In this sweeping, rural landscape, most families cannot afford to educate their children beyond Tanzania's free educational limits (up to grade 6). APW gives rural Tanzanians who are living side-by-side with wild predators (such as the highly-threatened African Lion) the chance to benefit from wildlife presence.
These children earn their scholarships through significant participation in our conservation education after-school programs and environmental summer camps. They have demonstrated a commitment to their community and to the natural world. They want to become the future environmental leaders of Tanzania - and you can help make it happen!
What We Need & What You Get
- We've already raised $8,000 for our scholars.
- One scholarship = $1,000/year.
- 25 scholars = $25,000. We have $17,000 left to raise!
If you donate, you'll have the chance to send a letter directly to our scholars and/or to receive a thank-you note in return from our conservation team. Check out all the fun perks at various giving levels!
Throughout the year, you can also opt to receive regular updates on our scholars' activities.
The Impact
In Tanzania, school is free only through grade six. Without financial support, even the brightest, hardest working children cannot go to secondary school.
Those children who have successfully progressed through APW's primary school youth programs can apply for one of APW's Noloholo Scholarships.
We select scholars based on performance in our youth programs, national and environmental science exams, and interviews with an unbiased committee.
These Scholars receive 6 years of full-ride scholarship (grades 7-12), plus additional mentor and mentee opportunities and free tutoring. Scholars must receive passing grades every year in order to maintain their funding.
APW just graduated its first class of scholars!
Risks & Challenges
We have been working on the Maasai Steppe in Tanzania for ten years. Our scholars develop a strong sense of civic responsibility and we have a strong rapport with them. Of course, they can always choose to leave the Steppe - even in this case we believe they will become environmentally-minded leaders in all walks of society.
