THE BOOK sees the ultimate collaborative Italian horror film unfold before your very eyes.  

A one off project of unprecedented scale, THE BOOK brings together, for the very first time, the writers, directors, actors, composers and artists behind the finest Italian genre cinema of the past sixty years. This includes the creative forces behind the Giallo movement, Spaghetti Westerns, Eurocrime and more. Each director will be given the opportunity to showcase their own personal vision of Rome, spread across a dozen episodes. Each segment in this feature film will contain a unique blend of macabre thriller, horror and the fantastic; all delivered with the unique style and method of the director in question.

THE BOOK features 12 individual episodes, each of which is helmed by a master of Italian genre cinema. 

The following directors are confirmed:

LAMBERTO BAVA (SHOCK, MACABRE, DEMONS (1&2), BODY PUZZLE)

Hailing from true horror lineage, LAMBERTO BAVA is the son of the legendary MARIO BAVA; the auteur behind some of the most innovative and transgressive genre features of the twentieth century. Learning the trade from his father, he also served as an assistant director (or second unit director) on a number of classic films and fan favourites, including; DANGER: DIABOLIK (1968), CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980), and TENEBRE (1982). His own movies have become greatly enthused upon by genre fans, particularly DEMONS (1985) and DEMONS 2 (1986), which made icons of its stars BOBBY RHODES and GERETTA GERETTA. Throughout the last two decades, BAVA has been working extensively in television (as have a great deal of his Italian horror peers), however, THE BOOK marks a return to the roots from which he spawned. Taking a classicist approach to contemporary horror, BAVA is set to become a name which is uttered once more as one of the true stalwarts of genre pictures.

ANTONIO BIDO (BLOODSTAINED SHADOW, CAT WITH THE JADE EYES, BLUE TORNADO)

ANTONIO BIDO grew up in the 1950s with an insatiable love of film that resulted in a youth not dissimilar to SALVATORE DI VITA’S character in GIUSEPPE TORNATORE’S CINEMA PARADISO (1988). BIDO was allowed access to a local projection booth as a child; an event which changed his life forever. His first experimental 8mm film, DIMENSIONI (1969), won the prize for best debut at MOTECATINI; which was the premiere Italian short film festival in the 1970s. This success led to a professional relationship with GIUSEPPE FERRARA, who mentored the young BIDO, giving him a position as first assistant director on FACCIA DI SPIA (1975), a wartime exploitation film. BIDO’S 1977 movie, IL GATTO DAGLI OCCHI DI GIADA (aka CAT WITH THE JADE EYES or WATCH ME WHEN I KILL) solidified his abilities as a gifted filmmaker, with its mature and artistic approach to genre. This was followed by the sublime SOLAMENTE NERO (aka BLOODSTAINED SHADOW) in 1978.

ENZO G. CASTELLARI (COLD EYES OF FEAR, THE HOUSE BY THE EDGE OF THE LAKE, THE LAST SHARK, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS)

ENZO G. CASTELLARI is the mastermind behind a plethora of genre classics, including the dystopian masterpiece 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS (1982). CASTELLARI is also responsible for creating  FRANCO NERO’S best western role outside of DJANGO (1966) in his 1976 film, KEOMA. As well as spanning western and action features, CASTELLARI is also one of the pioneers of the EUROCRIME genre (also known as the TOUGH COP or POLIZIOTTESCHI, movies). It was his 1973 feature; LA POLIZIA INCRIMINA LA LEGGE ASSOLVE (aka HIGH CRIME) which spawned a new wave of Italian crime films, very separate from their GIALLO counterparts. CASTELLARI’S legacy resonated with many young filmmakers, but none as influential as QUENTIN TARANTINO. THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS (1978) was one of several highly successful war films (along with LA BATTAGLIA D’INGHILTERRA aka EAGLES OVER LONDON) which left an indelible effect on TARANTINO, who even titled his 2009 blockbuster INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS as a tribute.

LUIGI COZZI (THE KILLER MUST KILL AGAIN, CONTAMINATION, STARCRASH, THE BLACK CAT, PAGANINI HORROR)

LUIGI COZZI makes a welcome return behind the camera after several years of working as an Italian genre film historian and curator of DARIO ARGENTO’S PROFONDO ROSSO museum and store in Rome. COZZI was taken on board by ARGENTO to serve as an assistant to the director on his 1971 Giallo film FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET. It was COZZI’S low budget debut, TUNNEL UNDER THE WORLD (1969), which brought him to ARGENTO’S attention and created a bond which has lasted to this day. Regularly delving into the world of science fiction and fantasy, COZZI has directed his own versions of GODZILLA (1977) and HERCULES (1983), the latter starring LOU FERRIGNO (of THE INCREDIBLE HULK fame). One of COZZI’S horror films, CONTAGION (1980), became embroiled in the VIDEO NASTIES furore in the UK, and was one of a number of films targeted and banned by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

ALBERTO DE MARTINO (THE ANTICHRIST, SCENES FROM A MURDER, HOLOCAUST 2000)

DE MARTINO is an Italian cinematic veteran, who has been actively involved in the film industry since his early days as a child actor. His directorial debut, THE INVINCIBLE GLADIATOR (1962) launched a career which spanned several decades, and a variety of genres. The ‘60s saw a range of thrilling war and action movies, but it was when FULCI favourite BARBARA BOUCHET starred in his 1971 movie; L’UOMO DAGLI OCCHI DI GHIACCIO (aka THE MAN WITH THE ICY EYES), that his reputation as a master of the suspenseful macabre was solidified. His action movie sensibilities transferred well to the Gialli of the time. His next Giallo, L'ASSASSINO... E AL TELEFONO (aka THE KILLER IS ON THE PHONE or SCENES FROM A MURDER) (1972), starred TELLY SAVALAS and would go on to become a cult classic. He made the jump into supernatural horror with 1974’s L'ANTICRISTO (THE ANTICHRIST) and 1977’s HOLOCAUST 2000. Incidentally, MARTINO was once in a jazz band with ANTONIO MARGHERITI and LUCIO FULCI.

RUGGERO DEODATO (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK, LAST CANNIBAL WORLD, CUT AND RUN)

From action to exploitation, RUGGERO DEODATO has become one of the most famous Italian filmmakers to attain international recognition for his genre work. A sublime storyteller and craftsman, his early thrillers, such as UNA ONDATA DI PIACERE (aka WAVES OF LUST) (1975) and UOMINI SI NASCE POLIZIOTTI SI MUORE (aka LIVE LIKE A COP, DIE LIKE A MAN) (1976) led to DEODATO’S first foray into the jungle for ULTIMO MONDO CANNIBALE (aka LAST CANNIBAL WORLD) in 1977; an experience which would change his life forever. The success of LAST CANNIBAL WORLD meant that DEODATO would return to South America in 1980 to create one of the most infamous movies of all time; CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. The film which not only pioneered the found footage genre, but additionally almost landed DEODATO in prison, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST remains not only one of the most shocking movies ever made, but one of the most acerbic socio-political commentaries on globalism and the destructive nature of contemporary society.

ALDO LADO (NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS, SHORT NIGHT OF THE GLASS DOLLS)

Another director to fall foul of the UK censor as part of the DPP Video Nasties witch hunt, LADO was one of the top tier of Giallo directors in early 1970s Italy. LA CORTA NOTTE DELLE BAMBOLE DI VETRO (aka SHORT NIGHT OF THE GLASS DOLLS) (1971) is regarded amongst aficionados as a prime example of an original and classic Giallo, featuring a heady mixture of creative direction and sensual violence. It was his 1975 feature, L’ULTIMO TRENO DELLA NOTTE (aka LAST STOP ON THE NIGHT TRAIN / NIGHT TRAIN MUDERS), which caused massive censorship problems throughout Europe, with Italian board of Censorship rejecting it completely. The political and social analysis contained in his films being as much a cause for controversy as his violent and sexual content, ALDO LADO remains an important and highly influential member of the Italian genre elite.  

UMBERTO LENZI (NIGHTMARE CITY, SEVEN BLOOD-STAINED ORCHIDS, THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER, EATEN ALIVE, GHOST HOUSE, CANNIBAL FEROX)

UMBERTO LENZI began his long and illustrious career as a writer, filmmaker and journalist who began making swashbucklers and adventure films in the 1960s. It was in 1969 that he made the crossover to more adult adventures, when he wrote and directed ORGASMO (aka PARANOIA), starring the beautiful CARROLL BAKER. This X-Rated thriller became praised as an early Giallo template, and LENZI spent the next few years contributing to the genre with films such as COSI DOLCE...COSI PERVERSA (aka SO SWEET, SO PERVERSE) (1969) and SETTE ORCHIDEE MACCHIATE DI ROSSO (aka SEVEN BLOOD-STAINED ORCHIDS) (1972). When he made IL PAESE DEL SESSSO SELVAGGIO (aka THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER / DEEP RIVER SAVAGES) in 1972, he became partially responsible for instigating a plethora of cannibal features that would change the face of Italian cinema forever. MANGIATI VIVI! (aka EATEN ALIVE) (1981) and CANNIBAL FEROX (1981) became his two most notorious entries into the anthropophagic sub-genre.

EDOARDO MARGHERITI (IN THE EYES OF A KILLER, SIX STEPS INTO GIALLO, BLACK COBRA)

EDOARDO MARGHERITI is the son of legendary APOCALYPSE DOMANI (aka CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE) (1980) director, ANTONIO MARGHERITI. He learned the trade from his father, as well as creating special effects for the SERGIO MARTINO film, 2019 - DOPO LA CADUTA DI NEW YORK (aka 2019 – AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK) (1983). Like his father, EDOARDO has worked in many cinematic roles; assistant director, screenwriter, producer, director and as an FX artist. His craftsmanlike approach to filmmaking can be seen in his movies. Early action films such as BLACK COBRA 2 (1990) and HUDSON HAWK (1991), on which he served as assistant director, helped MARGHERITI set up a successful and varied career as a filmmaker for both cinema and TV.

SERGIO MARTINO (TORSO, ALL THE COLOURS OF THE DARK, THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDTH, MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD, THE CASE OF THE SCORPION’S TAIL, YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY)

SERGIO MARTINO has been an active contributor to every imaginable Italian sub-genre since his beginnings as a writer in the mid-sixties. His Gialli are amongst the finest that the genre had to offer, including TUTTI I COLORI DEL BUIO (aka ALL THE COLOURS OF THE DARK) (1972) and LA CODA DELLO SCORPIONE (aka THE CASE OF THE SCORPION’S TAIL) (1971), He worked extensively with EDWIGE FENECH, who features in several of his best films, such as IL TUO VIZIO E UNA STANZA CHIUSA E SOLO IO NE HO LA CHIAVE (aka YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM AND ONLY I HAVE THE KEY) (1972) and LO STRANO VIZIO DELLA SIGNORA WARDH (aka THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDTH) (1971). With an eye for beauty, it was MARTINO who gave SUZY KENDALL her ultimate genre role, in 1973’s TORSO, and brought URSULA ANDRESS into the jungle for LA MONTAGNA DEL DIO CANNIBALE (aka MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD) in 1978.

SERGIO STIVALETTI (THE THREE FACES OF TERROR, THE PROFANE EXHIBIT, THE WAX MASK.

SERGIO STIVALETTI began his career as a special effects and makeup artist, working on over 40 major genre pictures throughout the 1980s, ‘90s and ‘00s. His distinctive and creative style helped greatly to enhance the visions of directors like DARIO ARGENTO, LAMBERTO BAVA and MICHELE SOAVI. 1985 was the year that STIVALETTI would get his big break, working on both ARGENTO’S PHENOMENA (as a special makeup effects artist) and BAVA’s DEMONS (creating the distinctive makeup and prosthetics). STIVALETTI’S directorial debut was M.D.C. – MASCHERA DI CERA (aka M.D.C. – MASK OF WAX) a film which was originally intended for LUCIO FULCI, but was handed over to STIVALETTI after FULCI’S death in 1996. His most notable work has appeared in films as popular and beloved as OPERA (1987), DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE (1994) and THE STENDHAL SYNDROME (1996).

TONINO VALERII (MY NAME IS NOBODY)

Famed spaghetti western director TONINO VALERII entered the Experimental Centre of Cinematography in 1955, but it was almost a decade later when he released his first full movie. He served as an assistant director on PER UN PUGNO DI DOLLARI (aka A FIST FULL OF DOLLARS), SERGIO LEONE’S famous 1964 film, which made a superstar out of its leading man, CLINT EASTWOOD. PER IL GUSTO DI UCCIDERE (aka FOR THE SAKE OF KILLING) (1966), took the experimentation of his early training and combined it with what he learned from LEONE. The following year he made I GIORNI DELL’IRA (aka DAY OF ANGER / GUNLAW), which starred both LEE VAN CLEEF and GIULIANO GEMMA. His ventures into the world of the Giallo resulted in MIO CARO ASSASSINO (aka MY DEAR KILLER) in 1972.

The screenplay will be provided by DARDANO SACCHETTI (THE BEYOND, DEMONS, MANHATTAN BABY)

The first two feature films written by DARDANO SACCHETTI were IL GATTO A NOVE CODE (aka THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS) (1971), directed by DARIO ARGENTO and ECOLOGIA DEL DELITTO (aka A BAY OF BLOOD or TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE), which was directed by MARIO BAVA. Due to the success of these movies, his career got off to a fairly exceptional start. For the next few decades SACCHETTI was the scribe behind innumerable genre favourites, including ZOMBI 2 (aka ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS) (1979), APOCALYPSE DOMANI (aka CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE) (1980), PAURA NELLA CITTA DEI MORTI VIVENTI (aka CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD) (1980), L'ALDILA (THE BEYOND) (1980) and QUELLA VILLA ACCANTO AL CIMITERO (aka THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY) (1981). An unsung hero of Italian horror, SACCHETTI is the individual who will be verbalising and developing the initial visions of the directors for THE BOOK.

ENZO SCIOTTI was in his teens when he went to Rome with a portfolio in his hand and a dream of working in cinema. He spent the next fifteen years honing his craft and becoming a master at graphic techniques which have resulted in his work being instantly recognisable as his own. Throughout his career as a movie poster artist he created over three thousand original promotional posters for films, both European and International. His Italian work is particularly distinctive, for he has created imagery for LUCIO FULCI, LAMBERTO BAVA and DARIO ARGENTO. SCIOTTI is still an active and prolific fine artist, but is making a special return to aesthetically represent THE BOOK.

Featuring a brand new score by GOBLIN and CLAUDIO SIMONETTI’S GOBLIN.

GOBLIN

For over forty years, GOBLIN has been stunning film fans and concert goers alike with their otherworldly, synth led progressive rock. Their collaborative work with DARIO ARGENTO remains, for many, the pinnacle of horror soundtracks. PROFONDO ROSSO (aka DEEP RED) (1975), ZOMBI (aka DAWN OF THE DEAD) (1978), and seminal album ROLLER (1976) are still acclaimed and sought after to this day, with special editions being released and in constant high demand. GOBLIN recently played a hugely successful tour across North America with the lineup of founding members; MASSIMO MORANTE, MAURIZIO GUARINI, and CLAUDIO SIMONETTI, along with BRUNO PREVITALI and TITTA TANI. The tour was a sell-out, but would prove to be the last time that audiences would see this incarnation of the band. PREVITALI, TANI and SIMONETTI have, as of late 2013, left to form CLAUDIO SIMONETTI’S GOBLIN. The existing GOBLIN lineup now consists of MASSIMO MORANTE (guitar), MAURIZIO GUARINI (keyboards), FABIO PIGNATELLI (bass), AGOSTINO MARANGOLO (drums) and AIDAN ZAMMIT (keyboards).

CLAUDIO SIMONETTI’S GOBLIN

CLAUDIO SIMONETTI’S GOBLIN is the recently formed incarnation of GOBLIN founding member CLAUDIO SIMONETTI (keyboards), who is now working alongside BRUNO PREVITALI (guitar), FEDERICO AMORISI (bass) and TITTA TANI (drums). This follows a recent sell out tour of the US. SIMONETTI formed the band using members who had previously played with both GOBLIN and covers band DEAMONIA.

Following the ambitious extremity of THE PROFANE EXHIBIT, producers DAVID BOND, SERGIO STIVALETTI and MANDA MANUEL present: THE BOOK. Assembling the finest living Italian filmmakers, the project intends to provide these elite creative forces a platform with which they can showcase the dexterity and innovation which brought them initial acclaim. Free of studio constraints, THE BOOK will be Italian genre at its most raw and basic form, with the impetus placed upon recapturing the magic which resonates with so many fans the world over.

LUIGI COZZI rende un gradito ritorno dietro la telecamera dopo diversi anni di lavoro come un film italiano genere storico e curatore di DARIO ARGENTO, PROFONDO ROSSO museo e store di Roma. COZZI è stato adottato da ARGENTO per servire come un assistente del direttore per la sua 1971 Giallo film QUATTRO MOSCHE DI VELLUTO GRIGIO. LA CORTA NOTTE DELLE BAMBOLE DI VETRO (aka CORTA NOTTE DELLE BAMBOLE DI VETRO (1971) è considerato tra gli appassionati come un primo esempio di un originale e classico Giallo, con un inebriante miscela di direzione creativa e sensuale violenza. UMBERTO LENZI iniziò la sua lunga e illustre carriera di scrittore, regista e giornalista che ha iniziato ad swashbucklers e avventura film in 1960. Fu nel 1969 che ha reso il crossover più adulto le avventure, quando ha scritto e diretto ORGASMO (aka PARANOIA), protagonista il bellissimo CARROLL BAKER. Questo thriller X-Rated divenne lodato come uno dei primi Giallo modello e LENZI ha trascorso i prossimi anni contribuendo a questo genere di film come COSI DOLCE, COSI PERVERSA (aka COSÌ DOLCE, COSÌ PERVERSA) (1969) e SETTE ORCHIDEE MACCHIATE DI ROSSO (aka SETTE MACCHIATI DI SANGUE ORCHIDEE) (1972).  Quando fece IL PAESE DEL SESSSO SELVAGGIO (aka L'UOMO DAL PROFONDO FIUME / DEEP RIVER SAVAGES) nel 1972, divenne parzialmente responsabile di istigazione una pletora di cannibale caratteristiche che cambiano il volto del cinema italiano per sempre. MANGIATI VIVI! (Aka MANGIATO VIVO) (1981) e THE CANNIBAL FEROX (1981) divenne il più famoso due voci nella anthropophagic sub-genere.

EDOARDO MARGHERITI è il figlio del leggendario APOCALYPSE DOMANI (aka CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE) (1980) Il direttore, ANTONIO MARGHERITI. Ha imparato il commercio dal suo padre, nonché la creazione di effetti speciali di SERGIO MARTINO film, 2019 - DOPO LA CADUTA DI NEW YORK (aka 2019 - DOPO LA CADUTA DI NEW YORK) (1983).  Come suo padre, EDOARDO ha lavorato in diversi ruoli cinematografici; assistente alla regia, sceneggiatore, produttore, direttore e come FX artista. SERGIO STIVALETTI ha iniziato la sua carriera come effetti speciali e del trucco artista, lavorando su più di 40 maggiori generi foto in tutto il 1980s, anni '90 e ' 00s. PROFONDO ROSSO (aka PROFONDO ROSSO) (1975), ZOMBI (aka DAWN OF THE DEAD) (1978), album seminale e RULLO (1976), sono ancora acclamato e ricercato di questo giorno, con edizioni speciali e in costante.
