Overview
Help to build a yoga studio specifically designed to provide one-on-one yoga therapy to individuals who have suffered a spinal cord injury or other neurological injuries/disorders/

Thank you so much for taking the time to view my campaign!

My name is Samantha Okumura and I am a yoga teacher in Las Vegas, NV. Shortly after graduating college, I accepted an internship working for a nonprofit organization that offered adaptive exercise therapy to individuals who have suffered a spinal cord injury. From that moment I knew that I would pursue a career working with neurological injuries. I didn't know at the time how underserved this community was or how difficult it was to find affordable, long-term, post-acute therapy that is so critical to maintaining overall health in the body post-injury. This studio is my humble attempt to provide an affordable recreational therapy, a healing atmosphere and a space to build community.

Many individuals who suffer from paralysis, multiple sclerosis, or other neurological disorders/injuries experience high tone and spasticity in the muscles, decreased bone mineral density, chronic nerve pain, weak diaphragms (weak breath), poor circulation/ability to regulate blood pressure, overall disconnectedness to the body, depression and anxiety, as well as the negative consequences of spending a lot of time in a seated position. Yoga therapy (modified asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), and meditation) is a beautiful complement or addition to other physical therapy. We work one on one to maintain mobility and flexibility in the joints and spine, build posture and core strength, improve breath control, and calm the mind and spirit while building better awareness and connectedness to the body.

I truly believe that the benefits of yoga should be accessible to everyone and are not only life-changing but critical to physical, mental and spiritual well being. This campaign is a small drop in the bucket to empowering this community but has the potential to provide a much needed space for healing. The SCI community is terribly underserved. Not only is it difficult to get the bare minimum of what they need for daily living (which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per year and up to a million dollars the first year post-injury) but the majority of post-acute rehabilitation and therapy is not covered by medical insurance even though it is absolutely critical and irreplaceable in maintaining  health.

I'm am setting my goal at $10,000 but I would be beyond grateful for any amount. This money will go directly to the cost to open and appropriately furnish a healing yoga space in Las Vegas, NV and more specifically to:

- flooring and paint

- wall mirrors

- specialized adaptive equipment for grip strength

- therapy tables for those that can't transfer to and from the floor

- stall bars

- pulley system and resistance band systems

- yoga blocks, mats, bolsters, straps, and wedges

- other adaptive tools

- organic cleaning supplies

Anything that is left over will go directly to free sessions to a fixed income individual with a cervical level injury resulting in paralysis from the shoulders down.

I am beyond grateful for any donation but that's not all you can do to help. Simply spreading the word by sharing this campaign on your social media accounts may allow this campaign to reach an individual who truly needs this service and feels that there are no resources available to them.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Namaste
