Our Story
We are just two Wilson Tigers trying to leave our paw prints behind.
Sebastien: I am a sophomore at Wilson Senior High School in Washington, DC. In second
grade I was exposed to new art forms through a clinic at Georgetown Hospital
where I spent my time while my brother was upstairs being treated for cancer.
The clinic introduced me to activities that I would have never otherwise found.
I want to do the same thing. Not necessarily art, but I want to share new
things with kids, such as sports they may not be familiar with. I want kids to
know they should follow their passion regardless of what anyone else says.
Ciara: I am a junior at
Wilson Senior High School in Washington, DC, and I want to make a difference. As a freshman at
Wilson, I was exposed to so many things that I wish I had been exposed to
earlier in life like lacrosse and ceramics. If I had been exposed to
lacrosse earlier in my life, I would have realized how passionately I felt
about the sport. I hope to inspire the children to follow their dreams and try
new things.
We got involved in a program called The Future Project at our high school. We joined this program because we wanted to make a difference in the world. After many weeks of thinking about what we are passionate about, we came up with an idea that would benefit our community. We realized we are both passionate about helping others, and particularly kids. We worked as camp counselors over the summer, so we have experience working with kids. We are passionate about getting kids to think big and follow their dreams. For our project, we would like to conduct a one-day camp for students in fourth and fifth grade. The purpose of our camp is to provide a safe place that parents can send their kids for free while they are at work.
The Impact
We came up with the name ThinkTank for our project because we hope
to get the kids thinking about their passions and dreams. We also want to
inspire kids to follow those dreams and think big. By the end of the day, we
want them to know that they can do anything they put their mind to.
The ThinkTank is going to be launched as a one-day camp that will be hosted on Emancipation
Day this April. The purpose of the ThinkTank is to provide a place for
these kids to come and experience new opportunities that they otherwise may not
have been exposed to. For example, instead of offering normal sports such as
basketball and football, we will offer new things like lacrosse and racquetball.
In addition to this, we are aiming to inspire these kids to find a passion they
have and follow their dreams.
Hopefully one day we can expand our project into an all expenses paid, week long camp where kids can go to discover new things and find new passions!
What We Need & What You Get
The most important aspect of the ThinkTank is, IT'S FREE! We want parents to have a good, safe, fun place to send their kids without having to face the burden of paying high prices for this one day of child care. Everything at this camp, from the ingredients needed for the kid-made lunches, to the tye-dye for the t-shirt each kid will get to take home as a reminder of the day, will be entirely paid for by fundraising and donations.
Here's where you come in!
We need donations to make the ThinkTank possible. The money will be split up as follows:
- $300 will go towards providing three nutritious meals (including a cooking class for lunch led by a professional cook and nutritionist)
- $280 will go towards security and maintenance of the venue (our high school; Woodrow Wilson SHS in Washington, D.C.)
- $300 will go towards purchasing the customized ThinkTank t-shirts
- $320 will go towards purchasing materials for the ThinkTank activities (i.e., pottery clay and paints for ceramics, floor hockey sticks and pucks, frisbees, tye-dye for self expression and t-shirts)
- $100 will go toward providing a yoga instructor to lead a yoga class as one of the activities during the day
- $75 will provide the ThinkTank with an acting coach for an acting class in which kids will put together a performance that they will share with everyone at the end of the day
- The remaining money will act as a safety buffer in case we end up hosting more kids than initially expected
If we don't get any money, we will have to prioritize and cut many of our planned activities off of the list. We want to provide as many new opportunities to the kids as possible, so we hope you will be willing to make even a small donation to help. If you are unable to donate money at this time, please please help us spread the word so we can make this happen!
