The folks from the celebrated era of Bohemian National Home (2004-2008) are transforming a spice warehouse into an arts center in Detroit.
After three long years spent searching, we're opening our new concert venue, Trinosophes, in Detroit's Eastern Market. Funds will complete the rennovation, transforming this 9,000-square-foot former spice processing warehouse into a multi-use facility that will also be home to a cafe, gallery, Ditto Ditto publishing and distribution house, and a second Peoples Records location which will feature Brad Hales' Detroit music history museum!
This artist-run space is a continuation and expansion of the celebrated programming previously held at Bohemian National Home (2004-2008) -- deemed "One of America's 50 Coolest Places" by Spin Magazine and "the little avant-garde engine that could" by Detroit Free Press' Mark Stryker -- and in various locations for the past three years as Bohemian-in-Exile. We have presented more than 800 of the greatest performers from Detroit, across the US and Africa, Europe, South America and The Middle East.
In music, we've hosted such historically significant and/or critically acclaimed performers as The Sun Ra Arkestra, Mission of Burma, Sam Rivers, Henry Grimes, Daniel Higgs, Damo Suzuki, Rhys Chatham, Beppe Loda, Mary Halvorson, The Evens (with Ian Mackaye of Fugazi), Fred Anderson, Dirty Three, Abuakwa African Drum and Dance Ensemble, Amir El Saffar, William Parker, Eugene Chadbourne, Simply Saucer, Peter Brotzmann, Instant Composers Pool, Quintron, Jack Rose, Glenn Jones, Zeena Parkins, Evan Parker, Jimmy Carl Black (of Zappa's Mothers of Invention) etc. Add in a healthy dose of film, DJ culture, dance and theater and you're getting a lot of the picture...
... but most of all we present Detroiters: Nathaniel Mayer, Faruq Z. Bey, Tyvek, Druid Perfume, SSM, Human Eye, MGM Grand, Paik, Oluyemi and Kenn Thomas, Scott Zacharias, Troy Gregory, Hakim Jami, Mick Collins, Friends of Dennis Wilson, Windy and Carl, The Volebeats, The Ultimate Ovations, The Readies, Nick Schillace, New Music Detroit and many, many others have graced our stage. We've exhibited art work, debuted films and provided master classes and lectures by the city's best creatives.
Lesser known is our work behind the scenes. We use our venue as a resource to facilitate creativity in the community and as a civic space, available at little or no cost for fundraisers, benefits, and rehearsal/work spaces.
More than $65,000 have already been put into the renovation and redesign of this early 20th century building. We need your help to finish it up.
