The TL;DR:
This IndieGoGo will cover the costs of paying everyone involved, helping us keep the same high standards we had for season one and create season two on a faster timeline. The episodes will be slightly longer than season one and there will be a larger cast for season two, which is why I’m turning to crowdfunding to help make it happen.
If you want to support indie audio drama with diverse creators & casts, this is a great way to do it!

About the crew:
I’m Michelle Nickolaisen, the writer and creator of Unplaced. I had the idea for it after a particularly rough patch of my life, where I started to feel disconnected from everything around me.
I scripted season one in March of 2017, had it beta-read and edited by May 2017, and started releasing in October (launching on Friday the 13th! ? ). I anticipate the turnaround time from finished scripts to launch to be much faster for season two, due to not having to find my main actor or an audio engineer. I’ve also successfully completed and fulfilled a Kickstarter before, so I have experience managing crowdfunding campaigns and projects of this scope.
In addition to me, there’s Cole and Brendan:
- Cole Burkhardt is the primary voice actor/the mostly-unnamed narrator for season one.
- Brendan Hutchins is the audio engineer/editor/sound designer and soundtrack composer.
There will be more actors for season two, but we haven’t started auditioning yet.
Cost breakdown:
Our goal is set for $3,000, which will cover all of the audio production costs (possibly with some money left over — we’re working off a rough estimate right now, as I have outlines and some scripts for season two, but don’t have runtimes yet for the episodes). That still leaves me paying the actors for season two out of pocket, but that's a cost I can cover if I have to.
If we reach that goal, whatever we raise over the initial goal will go towards paying the actors. After that, funds will go towards increasing the hourly rate for the actors, then for paying for me to take time off work to finish season two faster.
If we don’t meet the goal, I’ll put whatever money we do receive to paying for production costs, and season two will still happen — it just might be on a slower timetable.
Stretch goals:
Of course, we'd love to cover more than the base cost for audio engineering, which is why we have a whole host of stretch goals!
- $3,500: We'll release an “audiobook” version of Unplaced season one (all of the episodes cut together in one file without the outros)
- $4,000: We'll give season two the audiobook treatment as well, and release it to backers once we're done recording/producing S2
- $4,500: Everyone backing at $25 and higher will get a physical script book with all of the scripts for seasons one and two
- $5,000: We'll do a public, remastered re-release of season one
- $5,500: We'll record behind-the-scenes commentary audio for each episode of season one
- $6,000: We'll record behind-the-scenes commentary audio for each episode of season two
- $6,500: Everyone backing at $25 or higher will get script books for seasons one and two that are also annotated (get all the notes on notes on why I chose specific names or locations, what got changed between drafts, and why) and signed (definitely by me, Michelle, and if we can figure out the logistics, by the whole crew)
Campaign/production timeline:
- Wrapping up scripts while the campaign runs (May 14th — June 28th)
- Aiming to have scripts drafted and sent to beta readers in June
- Start production late June (possibly sooner depending on editing time/beta feedback)
- First episode drops in mid to late July
