UnTabooed: #healthy28forall
I founded UnTabooed in May 2015 after learning that women all over the world, including the United States, are facing issues accessing menstrual products. As someone who has donated many bags of food, clothing, and hygiene products to women in need, I was shocked that I had never thought to include menstrual products.
As I investigated this issue further at the local level in New York City, I discovered that many shelters don’t ask for menstrual products, but are in desperate need of them. I also learned about initiatives in developing countries by organizations that provide affordable, accessible reusable menstrual products to women who need them. Since I was already familiar with reusable menstrual products myself, I wondered if there was a way I could bring that same solution to the USA. I found that although researchers and public health officials recognize the need for greater access to menstrual products among homeless women in the USA, no one has tackled the problem with a longterm solution.
UnTabooed is committed to breaking the taboo surrounding menstruation by providing menstrual health education and sustainable menstrual products to women* in need, and promoting conversation among people everywhere.
*We recognize that not all people who have periods identify as women, and not all people who identify as women have periods. For this reason, you may see the word menstruator used when talking about menstrual product access. Our workshops are open to anyone and everyone who wants to help break the taboo surrounding menstruation.
UnTabooed has a unique, one-hour workshop that blends all the facts and FAQ's about the menstrual cycle and reusable menstrual products.
We believe that menstrual health education and access to menstrual products is a human right. For this reason, UnTabooed offers free workshops and products for organizations serving homeless and low income girls and women. We also offer our workshops on a sliding scale for anyone and everyone else. Our goal is to help break the taboo around menstruation and help more people make the switch to reusable menstrual products.
This year we strive to achieve a #healthy28forall through offering 28 free workshops to women in need, in hopes of a healthy 28 (on average!) day menstrual cycle for all women. In those 28 free workshops we are aiming to reach 300 women who otherwise would not have access to these products, working with #300in2017.
The free workshops and materials that we offer, including all of the reusable menstrual products a participant needs for the next 5-10 years, costs us $250 per workshop.
We need $7,000 to reach our goal of offering 28 free workshops to reach 300 women next year!
Besides our eternal gratitude, we are offering a few perks to donating.
We have printed 50 of this limited edition, pre-stamped, postcard. Pass it on to someone you love this holiday season! Donate a minimum of $10 in the first two days to receive this special thank you gift (while supplies last).
*due to the nature of hand-printing, each bag is unique!
