The Short Story
Vox Pop is a Washington, DC-based vocal band who has become one of the most successful and well-known a cappella groups of our kind both regionally and nationally. So why are we doing this? The full story is below, but if you’re short on time:
TL;DR Vox Pop’s 2nd album is almost ready to be released but we are raising $3,000 to finish mixing and offset the costs of distributing to digital stores and streaming platforms. If all goes according to plan, it will be in your ears this Spring. We’ve also got some fun rewards to incentivize your support, but the real prize is a start-to-finish fire-breathing, eight track album for you to listen to over and over until we make the next one!
The Long Story…
Over the past few years, one of the most common questions we get asked is: When are you going to release a new album? It’s a fair question. Vox Pop was established in 2003 as a group for people who sang in college a cappella groups to continue to do what they love while in the “real world”. Through the years, members came and went, the musical style changed with the times, but the heart of the group remained the same. As a cappella turned into a household commodity led by the likes of Pentatonix and the Pitch Perfect movies, we released our very first recorded single (2011’s “Animal”) and album (2013’s Mandate). This was a big moment for a cappella and Vox Pop was right there for it with bold, ambitious covers of songs spanning decades with a unique, contemporary sound.
This was also a turning point for our membership and musical tastes. From 2013 to 2016, we condensed in size, expanded in sound, and focused on defining just what makes Vox Pop what it is. Although it’s admittedly hard to put into words, this mission can be boiled down to composing arrangements that push the boundaries of what is typically expected of post-collegiate a cappella, choosing songs to cover that are either completely overlooked or begging for reinterpretation, and delivering dynamic live performances that leave the audience always wanting more. We honed this energy into four singles in 2015 that were recognized for Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award nominations and live performances that led to award-winning competition sets. They were a focal point for what was to come…
Now, in our 15th year as a professional vocal group, Vox Pop is ready to answer the question of when we will be releasing our next album - the answer is now! In Fall of 2017, we went into the studio and recorded a new album with our good friend Angela Longo, an a cappella superstar and top producer from The Vocal Company. This is the best work we’ve ever done, a culmination of the past five years of hard work developing our vision and our sound.
You’ve waited a long time for this, and so have we. We thank you so much for patience and support along the way. But let’s face it - we’re all tired of waiting. That’s where you come in! Album production and distribution is expensive and we need a little support from you to get us to the finish line.
