Since it was founded in 2011 by Megan Purdy, Women Write About Comics has grown exponentially. We — a volunteer group of well over 100 passionate women and non-binary writers — continue to bring fresh, varied, Eisner Award-nominated comics criticism and geek culture commentary to you.
In the past year, we branched off with two new sister sites, Ms En Scene and Sidequest, to focus on moving pictures and gaming respectively. And with the help of our previous Indiegogo supporters, we also ventured into the world of zine publishing with Bleating Heart Press, which has since produced four issues of Secrets of the Goat People, with so much more to come.
But with great expansion, comes great technical difficulties.
As you may have noticed, we have struggled over the past year with a lot of downtime, broken links and images, loss of ad revenue, and a lot of frustration. Our host just can't handle all this greatness, so we need to move to one that can.
What We Need
The cost of moving WWAC to a new host, including all the background work to transfer seven years worth of archives, is more than we can handle on our own, so we're asking for your help to get us over that initial hump. Our transition will also involve implementing a layout that can handle the site. Any extra funds we may graciously receive will go towards regular site maintenance costs as we move forward.
The Impact
We are still producing the same great content you've come to expect from us, but once we're secure in our new home, we can continue to do that without all the downtime and the behind-the-scenes stress.
Risks & Challenges
The initial restructuring of our site went unexpectedly sideways for various technical reasons. We believe that we have pinpointed the major culprits and are confident that we won't be bringing the bugs with us to a new host. That said, the best laid plans...
