THE “YAHA” TEAM.
We are group of emerging filmmakers from Perth, Western Australia looking to tell a fun, exciting story that feels definitely Australian. Yaha represents the end of our degree as Screen Production students at Murdoch University, as this film is our final assessment. Our idea for this film is one that we know is unique, and one that we are tremendously excited to bring to life.
Our film is a comedy about two people with the same goal, being forced to work together by the end of the story. It’s what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.
At it’s core, Yaha is about purpose. It’s about finding your thing, and sticking with it. Yaha’s thing is cleaning windshields. Storytelling is our thing - and that’s why we need your help:
Marcus Scrimshaw - Director
Marcus is the writer/director of Yaha. In the writing process, he wanted to create a character that was both original and could capture a piece of the city he’s from. To sum up Yaha, he’s living his best life with little regard for anyone else, if he can put his ego aside, he’ll be able to thrive. There’s always another obstacle that’s going to come your way in life, but when you can tackle those obstacles with a friend, it makes the journey a hell of a lot easier. Marcus firmly believes that to lift someone’s spirits, sometimes all that is needed is to extend a hand and show some compassion. This is the thematic notion he hopes this short-film will express.
Harrison Mitchell - Producer
Harrison is the producer of Yaha. What attracted Harrison to this project was how unique and exciting the idea was. When reading the script, Marcus’s passion jumped off the page; Yaha pays tribute to Perth and the people that inhabit it. The theme of teamwork in Yaha is important now more than ever, as Screen Production is all about working together as a unit. Harrison hopes to bring Marcus’s sublime script to life, to make the production as awesome as possible, and to be the best producer he can be for the Yaha team.
Anaïs Bellini - Director of Photography
Anaïs Bellini, cinematographer and camera operator for Yaha, jumped at the opportunity to be in the short film after reading the script and being struck by its immediate visual and narrative potential. She has worked alongside Marcus before and loves his directing style and ideas, and is excited to be able to collaborate with him and the team to bring the internal visualisations into a wonderful external story and short adventure.
Herbert Chia - Production Design
Herbert is the Production Designer for Yaha. Having always been intrigued by lore and the way individual minds work, they see production design as a visual way to understand these things without outrightly saying it. The comedic aspect of Yaha piqued Herbert's interest in experimenting with ways to enhance and exaggerate on the characters' tropes.
Harper Levi - Sound
Harper was drawn to Yaha as it was a uniquely Australian story that you don’t really see told. From a sound perspective, the setting will prove to be a fun setting to soundscape, and the script calls for many possible directions the soundtrack can be taken in, allowing him to experiment and take liberties.
Danielle McDonald - Editor
Danielle McDonald jumped at the chance to work on Yaha when offered the role of visual editor. After reading the script, she immediately knew this story would be an opportunity to show off her quirky style as an editor. Dani sees the fast-paced, the harsh cuts and the rhythmic story of Yaha. She is excited to be on board and is ready to get back into the editing suite.
