Zoom co-founders David Back and Greg Moran became friends in college over a decade ago. Zoom was born 3 years ago when David mentioned his passion for collaborative consumption (or "the sharing economy") to Greg and suggested that they explore opportunities to take the Zipcar business model to a developing economy. Greg was working on renewable energy development in India and immediately jumped on the idea. After over one year of planning, both dropped out of MBA programs, giving up full scholarships - Greg at USC in LA and David at Cambridge in the UK.

We launched 1 year ago with just 7 cars, and now we have 125+ at 15 locations around Bangalore (with more cars and more locations added every month). You can hire a car by the hour, day, week, or month. And our transparent prices include taxes, fuel, insurance, and in-car technology.

No matter what you are doing, we have the right car for you! We currently offer Ford EcoSport, Mahindra Scorpio (7 or 8 seat), Volkswagen Vento, Honda City, Ford Figo, Mahindra REVA E20, BMW 3-Series. Coming soon are Mahindra XUVs and Tata Safaris.

As we say in the video, the suggested minimum donation was going to be 69 cents because that really captures the spirit of sexing up this car. That would have been about 45 rupees. But unfortunately, Indiegogo's minimum donation is $1. On the plus side, that's actually pretty close to 69 rupees...

Some might say that pimping out an Ambassador is it's own reward, but we want to make sure our backers get something nice, so we have a pretty alluring array of rewards on offer! If you want more than one reward, feel free to donate more than once. And if you want more than one of a certain reward, you can just donate the same amount more than once (e.g. if you want two full weekdays with a Ford Figo, just donate $20 two times).

Car-sharing democratizes transportation by extending the benefits of car use far down the income ladder. At the same time, it takes cars off the road and reduces the total number of miles driven. People think more about how they drive when they pay-per-use! In the United States and Europe, services like Zipcar and car2go have lowered pollution because people sold their cars or decided not to purchase a car, and instead, walked or used public transportation more frequently. They knew they have a car available when they needed one.  

India ranks 174/178 countries in air quality, thanks in large part to high vehicle density. Yet, only ~5% of India's population owns a car! Car ownership is projected to quadruple by 2020, making a catastrophic problem even worse. Indians already suffer major health consequences because of the pollution, including 30% reduced lung capacity in Bangalore, and a childhood asthma rate that has increased 10x in the last 16 years.  

Zoom can help create a culture of collaborative consumption - using existing resources more efficiently.
