On average,
1 Kg / 2.2 pounds of food waste produces about
200 liters or
7 Cubic feet of gas, which generates around one hour of cooking over a high flame. Therefore, at 6 liters / in 1.58 gallons of food scraps, one can generate 1-3 hours of cooking gas each day - the perfect amount for three meals.

Arava Institute for Environmental Studies (
AIES) partnership provides HomeBiogas systems to Bedouin schools and education centers in the Middle East. Systems we have already installed (see video below) and continue to install in these communities divert animal waste away from valuable water sources; ensure safe and healthy cooking environments; and provide an inspiring communal resource for clean tech innovation for parents and students alike.
These communities currently have no waste management infrastructure, meaning that all animal waste gets either burned or dumped nearby valuable water sources transferring harmful pollutants and toxins for children/community.
The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, named one of the top 100 environmental research organizations in the world, is dedicated to solving regional and global environmental challenges through international cooperation initiatives, trans-boundary research, and capacity-building projects. Students at the Arava Institute are comprised of Jordanians, Palestinians, Israelis, and others from all over the world.

Operation:
Q: Do I need electricity to operate Hombiogas?
A: No. The system is 100% off-grid.
Q: How long after putting organic waste into HomeBiogas will it produce gas?
A: After installation, HomeBiogas may take between 2-4 weeks to produce gas.
Q: Is biogas production continuous?
A: Yes. As long as you feed the system, it will continue to produce gas.
Q: What happens if I don’t feed the system for a while?
A: The system will digest all the waste inside the tank then stop producing gas.
Once you get back to feeding the system it will return to continuous biogas production.
Installation:
Q: How long does it take to install HomeBiogas?
A: It takes two people about 2 hours to install HomeBiogas.
Q: Can I install the system by myself?
A: Yes. Anyone can assemble the biogas unit. However, connecting HomeBiogas’s gas pipe to the stove should be done by a licensed gas technician. Detailed instructions are provided with the system.
Q: How much water do I fill HomeBiogas with?
A: Initially, fill the tank with water to its full capacity(about 650 liter). Once HomeBiogas is in operation, remember to add one liter of water for every liter of waste added.
Q: How do I activate HomeBiogas?
A: You can activate HomeBiogas one of two ways. The most effective method is to use animal manure (specifically any animal that chews its cud i.e. a cow). If you don’t have access to animal manure, biogas bacteria starter kits can easily be acquired. Detailed instructions are provided with the system.
Performance:
Q: How much waste can I feed HomeBiogas each day?
A: You can input up to 6 liters (6qt) of food waste or up to 15 liters (15qt) of animal manure into HomeBiogas each day. If you feed the system with less, the amount of gas produced will be smaller.
Q: How much gas can I produce with HomeBiogas?
A: Every liter of food waste produces about 200 liters of gas, the amount needed to cooking for one hour over a high flame. On average, HomeBiogas produces 2-3 hours of cooking gas each day - the perfect amount for three meals.
Q: For how long does a gas burner and barbecue grill run on a full HomeBiogas tank?
A: A full HomeBiogas tank (400 liters of biogas) can fuel a three-blade barbecue grill for 45 minutes, and a typical stove burner for about two hours.
Q: How many liters of fertilizer can I get from HomeBiogas each day?
A: HomeBiogas can provide between 5-10 liters of top quality natural fertilizer each day.
Maintenance:
Q: What type of maintenance is involved with HomeBiogas?
A: We recommend maintaining your HomeBiogas unit once a year by:
1. Replacing its gas filter (takes a minute to do and filter cost about $20).
2. Removing the sludge that accumulates at the bottom of the digestion tank via the outlet pipe.
Safety & Warranty:
Q: Is HomeBiogas safe?
A: Yes. HomeBioGas was tested and received the European Community CE stamp of approval for safety. We are starting the process of getting UL approval. HomeBiogas was also tested and approved for safety and health by the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ministry Of Energy and Infrastructure.
Q: Does HomeBiogas come with a warranty?
A: Yes. HomeBiogas comes with a 12 month limited parts and materials warranty.
Additional Info:
We highly recommend connecting HomeBiogas to a separate burner placed on your counter-top (bought separately), so it is simple to use Biogas and/or your existing gas system.
Q: Will it work in any weather?
A: HomeBiogas performs well when the day/night 24-hour average temperature is 17°C (63°F) and above. Once the temperature drops lower than that the unit’s gas output is significantly reduced. On the other hand the system will work very effectively in high temperatures, either humid or arid.
Q: What about cold countries?
A: We are developing a cold weather solution. Since we do not provide the solution as of yet, we can't recommend installing the system in cold weather countries. To get notified once the solution will be available follow us on facebook.
Q: Can I connect HomeBiogas to the existing appliances in my house?
A: Yes, but your home appliance, including your stove, need to be modified to support biogas. A single burner cannot be shared and used both for biogas and conventional gas.
Q: How do I convert my stove into a biogas stove?
A: You have to take out the pressure reducing nozzle (contact us for more details).
Q: Can I purchase the biogas stove from you?
A: No. You’ll need to purchase the stove locally.
Q: Can I use HomeBiogas for water heating?
A: Yes, but since the amount of gas produced will be sufficient for a maximum of 45 minutes of heating or less, we recommend using the gas for cooking and the fertilizer for the garden. This way you can complete a natural food cycle in your own home.
Q: Can I install HomeBiogas indoors?
A: We recommend the installation of HomeBiogas outdoors because once the gas tank is in its full capacity (400L) any excess gas generated will be released to the atmosphere.
Q: Can I fill HomeBiogas with grey water?
A: Yes. The system is grey water compatible.
Q: I have a composter, what is the added benefit of biogas?
A: Composters are mostly suitable to process lawn cuttings, leaves, grass wood shavings and vegetarian matter. For many reasons, composters are not truly suitable for kitchen leftovers like meat, fish, oil and fats. HomeBiogas is complementary to the composter since it digests the remains that the composter cannot process, and it also provides cooking gas and liquid fertilizer for immediate use.
Q: What happens to the excess gas I don’t use?
A: The built in tank stores 400 liters of gas. Any additional gas generated by the system is automatically released and dissipates into the atmosphere.
Q: Can I store gas for a later use?
A: Theoretically yes, but we do not provide a solution for accumulating gas for later use. Our system aims for direct use of the gas generated by your daily waste.

Performance
-
Gas production depends on the waste content that is being fed in, and might be less than expected.
Climate/weather
-
Our system can operate in warm and hot regions. If in any given month, the average day/night (24 hour) temperature drops below 18 degrees Centigrade (66 degrees Fahrenheit), the biological activity drops significantly and gas production will decrease.
-
Once it is full with water, exposure to temperatures below freezing point can cause damage to the system
