1000 Books for a Nigerian University- Tasued
I am seeking funds for shipment of donated books to a University in Nigeria. Currently, I have over 900 books donated and seek funding to send them home.
I am Philip Alabi, currently studying for a Masters degree in Chemistry from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. This drive was born out of the need to help more Nigerians get access to relevant information and textbooks that are needed for advancing their careers, education, and lives.
This is the last phase of a book drive I started in June, 2016. The aim was to collect about 1000 books that are fairly useful and donate same to my Alma mater – Tai Solarin University of Education, Nigeria. Given the number of books already donated, there arose a need for funding its shipment to Nigeria. This is the paramount reason I seek for funding. I hope to get good shipping deals as serious enquires are already underway. Any additional or extra funds raised will be donated to similar book projects like "Books for Africa", "textbooks for Change" etc.
I was motivated to seek book donations for my alma mater (Tai Solarin University of Education) when I saw how books quickly get outdated and wasted here in the US. Back home at Nigeria, there is an utter lack of resources. Personally, while studying for my undergraduate degree, I experienced difficulties sourcing for and acquiring academic materials. This, no doubt, had a tremendous downslide effect on my performance. Having been in such a blind spot before, I think I perfectly understand the need to, and the importance of providing books for learners. This is the circumstance that gave birth to this book donation project.
So far, the book drive has been a huge success. This has reinforced my belief that ideas truly can become undeniable realities. Without neglecting the support of friends, colleagues, and family, I am very glad that I have been able to collect over 900 books at the time of writing and it gladdens my heart to state that people still call and reach out for more book donations. It is beyond refreshing to know that the American populace is very committed to making the world a better place through small efforts of individuals.
Since embarking on this project, I have learned a lot and have come to understand that love and the desire to help is still a significant part of our society today. My ultimate desire will be to see these books in the hands of a student(back home) enjoying the read and learning new things from the texts, illustrations and pictures displayed. The lasting social and economic change that comes from more Nigerians knowing better is what I seek to achieve.
Thanks for your support and donations.
Together we can,
By myself, I can do little.
Give as you can....
