Short Summary
My name is Corey Carpenter. I am a senior film student at the University of Alabama. I grew up in Alabama in a small town called Wedowee. I have been in love with storytelling since I can remember, and I have a passion for visual media and true stories told in creative ways. I am directing and producing an animated documentary called A Penny For Your Thoughts about a troubled young man and his struggle with mental illness.
In life, I believe that each experience is unique and private. No matter how loud and fast the outside world seems to be portrayed, each living individual is quietly dealing with a life of struggles all to themselves. Along every “main” story line, there are countless accompanying storylines branching out to create a world of unique experiences (we can call them “sub-stories”). When it comes to Arthur Bremer, his private life of struggles was running parallel with the very public and controversial life of Alabama Governor George Wallace. At one very brief and very pivotal moment in time and space these highly contrasting “sub-stories” collided; making for a brief headlining story. One shining fraction of a second in the world’s eye existed for Arthur Bremer. That was what he wanted. Or rather, it was what he thought he wanted. Ultimately, Arthur Bremer failed to accomplish his goal (The goal of assassinating George Wallace) Failure was not something with which Mr. Bremer was unaccustomed.
Arthur Bremer’s life is documented as secluded, sad, and tortured. He had a standoff-ish personality. This personality was not by choice. It was due to his home life and extreme social awkwardness. Bremer detailed different parts of his past from bullying in school to his love life (or lack thereof). Bremer was obsessed with making a name for himself and regularly called himself a nobody throughout his writings. Was Bremer just a product of an abusive home? Was he mentally ill? Was he just a young 21 year old man full of angst and frustration with what appeared to an inescapable life of mediocrity?
The idea of the documentary is to show the seclusion of Arthur Bremer’s life framed around what was happening in the world around the time of each diary entry. The TV in the room will serve as a device to take us to the news footage and archival footage of the campaign and world events in between the animated scenes. Sort of serving as a window to the outside world as we are living in Arthur’s world.
What We Need & What You Get
We need money to help create this film. I cannot express my gratitude for the participation of everyone involved in the cast and crew. They've all been very generous and patient with me.
Making an animated film is hard work that takes time. Everyone involved has sacrificed a lot of their time for this project. The money you give will go directly to paying animators for their hard work as well as paying our voice over actor and festival entries.
We have a really cool poster in the works we are going to send out to certain contributors, and we're giving out credits in the film (you are making this thing happen, after all).
Other Ways You Can Help
If you can't contribute at this time, no worries! You can help with your encouragement and interest in the project as well as sharing this page on all your social media!
