Short Summary:
Partnering with Professors from Durban University of Technology (http://www.dut.ac.za) this project will have multifaceted components dealing with Information Commutation Technology specifically Video Production, Graphic Design, and Web Design.
Although apartheid was officially abolished in South Africa in 1994, its impact on the country has had lasting effects. According to Merriam-Webster, apartheid was “...a former policy of (racial) segregation and political and economic discrimination against non-European groups in the Republic of South Africa.” In Durban, South Africa there are currently many projects underway that are spearheaded by the Durban University of Technology (DUT). One of these projects is taking place at a municipal housing facility named Kenneth Gardens. Kenneth Gardens is an interesting case study due to the post-apartheid ethnic diversity that exists within the estate. In partnering up with DUT at Urban Futures Centre, I’ve been able to gain important knowledge about existing problems that affect Durban as a whole, such as segregation, drug use, safety, inclusion, and food sovereignty.
The project will include providing Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills that I have learned through the Everett Program (http://www.everettprogram.org/) to help reduce and shed light on the these social problems. I plan on helping out through video production, graphic design, and website development. One way in which I will use my ICT skill set will be by producing short documentaries of Kenneth Gardens for the website, designing advertisement for a women led community organization called Carrots and Peas in Kenneth Gardens that provides meals to over 150 residents “many of whom are elderly, disabled or unemployed and in dire need of help, (http://kennethgardens.co.za/) and leading and assisting a fellow undergraduate, Jessica Crosby, with labs aimed at teaching youth in the community ICT skills as a mean to consider social justice issues and sustain an active online presence.
The money raised by indiegogo will go towards the projects video production, graphic design, and web design. It will also go to living expenses.
I have received grants through the Everett Program RFP and Oakes Provost at The University of California in Santa Cruz to make this project possible.
