Overview
Join the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in collaboration with Heineken USA and the Triforium Project, as we set our sights on restoring the one and only Triforium—an out-of-this-world light-and-sound sculpture that once made downtown Los Angeles sing.

It’s time for LA’s Triforium to shine again!

We at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in collaboration with Heineken USA and the Triforium Project, are on a mission to reclaim and revitalize LA’s most audacious piece of public art after decades of silence. With your support, we’ll be one step closer to bringing its signature light and sound back to the heart of downtown.

The Triforium is a six-story, 60-ton public artwork by LA legend Joseph Young that sits in the shadow of City Hall. When it debuted in 1975, the space-age-looking, pointy edifice boasted 1,494 multicolored glass cubes that glowed in synchrony to music from a 79-note glass bell carillon, making it the largest musical instrument of its kind on Earth.

There had never been anything else like it ... anywhere!

Unfortunately, the Triforium was 40 years ahead of his time. The computer installed to synchronize the bells and lighting effects was plagued with problems from the beginning. Today, all of its incandescent bulbs have burned out, the instrument has been removed and sold, and the control room has been locked.

But it still stands, ready for its second act—thanks to new technology.

Interest in the project continues to grow. The volunteers behind the Triforium Project believe that Joseph Young’s vision for a “Rosetta Stone of art and technology” has a bright future in downtown LA. And people are noticing—just recently, the project was awarded a $100,000 innovation grant to kick off the restoration effort.

Today, the Triforium Project is working with the City of Los Angeles and the family of Joseph Young to develop a sustainable plan that brings Young’s original design into the 21st century. Their plan includes replacing the Triforium’s burned-out incandescent bulbs with LED lighting and building an interactive smartphone app and motion-sensor array. Thanks to these high-tech updates, all Angelenos will be able to play this remarkable musical instrument.

That’s right—forty years later, we can build things Joseph Young could only dream of creating. And these changes start right now, with your help!

One of the first critical steps is the replacement of broken-down, refrigerator-sized computers that originally controlled the Triforium with a new, faster and smaller networked computer system. This flexible “brain” will control the Triforium’s new LED lighting array and synchronize it to music in real time, turning the plaza into the bright musical heart of Los Angeles.

Success! We're happy to report that our campaign raised $39,780! That's $24,780 above our original goal of $15,000!

Thanks to the generous support of our backers, we’ll soon kick-start the Triforium’s reinvention, including contributing funding to the first big project—installing the computers needed to bring its light and sound back.

Please stay tuned to the updates section of this page for additional project news.
