Jamaican Almonds, LLC’s objective is to be the first company to ever import almonds from Jamaica, while maintaining local farming employment and prudent environmental protection. Our CEO, Bruce Satter has been visiting Jamaica since the early eighties and considers it his second home, having spent many relaxing vacations. While he was there in 2012, he was introduced to the fact that almonds are grown organically all over the island and no one has ever cultivated them for export.
Where
It’s Going
The initial funding will be distributed among the following expenses:
-
Follow-up meetings with government agencies in Jamaica for coordination
efforts of
several Ministries, including MOAF (Ministry of Agriculture &
Fisheries,MFAFT (Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade), etc.
-
Coordination of CFC’s (Central Farming Collectives) and individual almond
farmers in Jamaica.
-
Regulatory Affairs including Organic Certifications, FDA & USDA and
Laboratory testing in Jamaica.
The
Impact / A Brand New Industry
Jamaica has a rare opportunity to export a commodity
for the very first time. Jamaican
Almonds, LLC is committed to the following aspects of pioneering this brand new
industry:
-
As stated in our Mission Statement, we are committed to maintaining the
manual process of the collection of almonds, thereby providing
long-term economic progress and sustainable employment for the farmers of
Jamaica.
-
The Environmental Footprint of Jamaica is extremely important to
maintain through protection and ecological balance. One example of this is
to advise farmers to seed new crops according to recommended agricultural
methods that will discourage the utilization of “shakers” from being
implemented for the removal of nuts from trees. This process is used in
other industrialized countries, which involve mammoth sized vehicles with
“tweezer-like” claws that shake the nuts off the trees, thereby eliminating
the need for manual labor. Another example is when time approaches to plant
new tree seedlings for continuous and future crops, it is done with
environmental protection standards in mind and not resort to the less than
acceptable “orchard-style”planting, which wastes far too much land and
produces a lessor quality of almonds.
-
From the beginning we have maintained the concept of “dotting every I
and crossing every T”, as we take the responsibility of pioneering this new
industry very seriously. We have included the most upstanding individuals in
our company that have proven to have outstanding credentials and the same
passion for integrity that we have. We have a Registered Trademark for the
words, “Jamaican Almond” in the United States which requires our company to
do everything possible to ensure and uphold the continued reputation of
Jamaican almonds and derivative products. This includes the adherence to
specific requirements for importing almonds and derivative products from
Jamaican farmers and companies, including and not limited to FDA, USDA,
Import/Export, Organic Certifications and Laboratory labeling.
-
As the company grows licenses will be issued to industry for all aspects of
the almond farming and exporting processes, including future launches, such
as flavoring extract products and fertilizer/mulch products, etc.
Central
Farming Collectives:
We are seeking farmers that are interested in becoming
a part of this new opportunity to cultivate
almonds for export through our company’s network. These companies
and/or individuals must reside in the country of Jamaica and satisfy the minimum
standards and requirements set forth by Jamaican Almonds, LLC.
All inquiries should be directed to our “Farmer’s
Questionnaire” that can be filled out and
electronically submitted through our website at Farmers
Questionnaire or
a copy can be requested by emailing us at farmers@jamaicanalmonds.us.
For anyone unable to access the internet from your location, please call
toll-free from Jamaica at 800-572-7780 and leave a message, including your name
and return phone number.
A customer service representative will give you a call back and take a verbal
application.
Risks
& Challenges
The risk is that the US and/or Jamaican government
agencies, such as the FDA would make the importation of Almonds more
challenging. The challenge to us is to cross every T and dot every I, when
it comes to Organic Certifications and required testing. However, this is not
rocket science and having our COO, Allen F McSherry over-seeing our Regulatory
Affairs department will be a great asset. Mr. McSherry is a licensed Pharmacist
in five US states and very familiar with the scientific aspects of our project.
Additionally, the government of Jamaica is working with our company to ensure
that this new industry comes to fruition, as everyone is in agreement that we’re
talking about a Super-food here that can only have positive results with Jamaica
sharing their almonds with other countries.
We plan on spending a lot of our time in many parishes
in Jamaica, where our Central Farming Collectives will be housed and
over-seeing this and the processes that will be put in place from hulling
and pasteurization equipment to the collection of almond’s work-flow from local
farmers.
It’s important to point out that perhaps the most
important emphasis of this journey, as stated in our
Mission Statement, is “our emphasis will be to maintain the farming of Jamaican
organic almonds while utilizing as many processes as possible to ensure the
utilization of local farmers for a higher quality of life in the country of
Jamaica”.
Another challenge will be to design the most
economical and prudent transportation system for the
actual export process when we’re ready to bring our first load of product to
Florida for further distribution. This will be handled by our CEO, Bruce H.
Satter who spent over thirty years managing and selling in the “transportation
of commodities” industry for over thirty years and has a solid reputation,
including experience in all facets of transport. He is particularly
knowledgeable of import/export regulations, including precise cutting of
international documentation and to the adherence to customs requirements for
both countries.
