We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
Winston Churchill

I came up with the idea of creating "Bum Sacks" while stopped at a red light one morning.  A man was standing on the corner holding a sign that read "Hungry. Anything will help." If you're anything like me you rarely carry cash anymore but  I shuffled around in my purse praying to find a dollar. As the light turned green and I was forced to continue with my commute I began to feel guilty for not having anything to give to this hungry man.  That's when it hit me; people are always contributing a dollar here or there for food but what about the necessities such as gloves, a hat, or even socks?

Having recently started a job in Tempe, I have noticed just how many homeless people are in need of some extra help.  With the winter months approaching they will need items to keep them warm and healthy especially during our cold desert nights.

What is a Bum Sack?

A Bum Sack is a drawstring backpack filled with some items that will help keep homeless men and women warm and healthy through the winter.  Ideally, each sack will contain a pair of gloves, a beanie, a pair of socks, chap-stick, non-perishable food items, and hygiene products.  The estimated cost of each Bum Sack is about $10 and it is my goal to make and hand out 150 of these before the end of the year.

Other Ways You Can Help

Some people just can’t contribute, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help:

  • Please spread the word! Share the link to my campaign on your Facebook or Twitter accounts
  • Volunteer to help deliver the final product!
  • If you work for a company that offers any of the mentioned items see if they are willing to donate. Any donations will be greatly appreciated!

Help me turn a dollar into so much more for people in need!
