Short Summary

With almost 1,000 people being deported daily, migrant shelters along the U.S.-Mexico border are crucial in the battle against abuses towards migrants. Oftentimes migrants are deported into Mexico with no money and no way to get back home. Casa del Migrante, a migrant shelter in Tijuana, provides these migrants with many services, including shelter, meals, first aid, spiritual help, counseling, and legal services, job training and placement. 87% of the migrants at Casa are deportees. Others are refugees awaiting humanitarian visas from the U.S.  While they wait, they need a safe place to stay. Migrants are a vulnerable population, often suffering from kidnappings, extortion, rape, or worse. Please help Casa del Migrante continue helping migrants in transit.

  • WHO I AM:  My name is Reyna Grande. I am the author of the books, Across a Hundred Mountains, Dancing with Butterflies, and The Distance Between Us. My books have received an American Book Award, the El Premio Aztlan Literary Award, among others. I am originally from Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico. I came to the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant at the age of nine after being separated from my parents for many years. As an immigrant myself, my work and my activism is all related to immigrant rights issues. I believe that all migrants should be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.
  • WHY I AM DOING THIS;  When I was a migrant, I was only a child, and luckily, my father took good care of me during our border crossing. We never ended up at a shelter. We were never stranded in the middle of nowhere, without money, without a helping hand, without hope, with nothing but broken dreams. I was one of the "lucky" ones. I managed to get to the U.S. and five years later I received a greencard, which allowed me to pursue my dreams of going to college, having a career, and making the American Dream my own. I succeeded, but many don't. The journey is perilous and much is at stake.  Migrants are human beings that deserve respect, compassion, and dignity, but often they are made to suffer all kinds of abuse. Please join me in making their journey less ardous and painful. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and their pursuit of a better life.
  • ABOUT CASA DEL MIGRANTE: Casa del Migrante (Tijuana B.C.) was founded in 1987, and is a faith-based non-profit temporary shelter run by the Scalabrinian Priests. the facility provides assistance to men who have been deported back to Mexico from the United States. Oftentimes these men return to Tijuana with no money and no way to get back to their home. They receive 3 meals a day, a shower, clean clothing, and are allowed to stay at the center for up to 12 days. The center also provides medical care, counseling, resources for job traning and placement, and spiritual guidance. Unlike the days of two decades past, when virtually all of the migrants receiving help were people attempting to cross into the U.S. without papers, 87% of the shelter’s clients are deportees from the United States. Others are refugees from Central America and all regions of Mexico, where violence has driven people to flee.
