Short Summary
Hi! I’m Jac and I’m Katie. Together we are opening a cafe that will advocate
for animal rights and build a culture of support for veganism. Our vision is a restaurant where people can
come together to share food and support animal rights at the same time. All
revenue from the cafe will go towards animal advocacy, since we will donate 100%
of profits to VegWorcester.
QUICK UPDATE! Since the start of the campaign we have signed a lease! Even if we don't 100% reach our goal Chickpea is definitely happening! It will be located at 927A Main St Worcester MA. Your contribution really makes a difference in determining when we can open, how much we can renovate the space, what equipment we can buy and overall how awesome it can be!
Please make a contribution to help its success!
The Impact
Located next to Clark University, Chickpea will make vegetarian food options available to the students and residents of the neighborhood as well as the city at large. The cafe will provide a
place for all people to try new and healthy foods. At the same time, it will raise money for the non-profit VegWorcester and be a space to hold workshops and lectures.
In addition, we are
working with the Regional Environmental Council and YouthGrow to source
vegetables from local farms. We are excited to include Adamah Foods products in our recipes.
At Chickpea we are building on the movement of socially-responsible
businesses by donating all of our profit.
Your contribution here will go a long way towards making this happen!
What We Need & What You Get
In order to make this happen, we need capital investment to buy equipment
and renovate the café space.
Renovations include: Putting in a new floor (~$2,000), Installing plumbing for 4 sinks and hot water heater (~$6,000 to $8,000), Installing electrical wiring for equipment (~$3,000), Installing ventilation (~$5,000 to ~$15,000)
Equipment includes: Industrial Sandwich Prep Unit (~$3,000), Beverage Holder (~$2,000), Commercial Freezer (~$1,500), Commercial Refrigerator (~$3,000), Refrigerated Display
Case (~3,000), Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine (~$5,000), Conveyor Belt Oven with Hood (~$2,500) , Commercial Stove (~$5,000 to ~$10,000)
Total cost between $20,000 - $40,000
Right now with $20,000 the menu includes a number of different types of
sandwiches, soups and salads.
If we exceed our goal, we will
also purchase a stove which will allow us to increase the number of items that
we can make! Think mac 'n cheese, stuffed shells, baked goods and PIZZA!
Even though it is only one of our products, we are excited to offer vegan
ice cream in honor of political activist Emma Goldman who once had an
ice cream shop in Worcester. With more funding we can increase the variety of
flavors and types of ice cream at the cafe.
