Exploring The Gateway City
Hello, I’m Charley Cano.
I’d like to show you the city of
Newark, NJ, that you may not know exists. It’s a city rich in history, culture,
art, music, beautiful architecture and timeless outdoor sculpture.
It’s a place
you may not have heard of for all the stories of crime and urban decay. But
hidden behind all the hyped-up headlines and the edges of a bygone industrial
era that are all you see when you’re passing us by on the highway is a vibrant downtown
alive with world-class galleries, unique shops, amazing restaurants, great
people and good times to be had. And then, of course, we have the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Newark Museum and Prudential Center.
Did you know that Newark is older than Philadelphia and Washington, DC?
Until this year, neither did I. (Only New York and Boston are older.)
Let me take you around town, in an old fashioned trolley. We’ll listen
to some fun music like bebop, trip-hop, indie, world beat and 60's soul and rock n’ roll as you take
in the sights, explore artistic visions and living history, shop for bargains
and stop for brunch, lunch or an early dinner of all kinds of international
cuisine. September-December and March-June.
Newark was once one of America's great cities and today is on the verge of reclaiming that grandeur. Come be a part of the Newark Renaissance and witness the rise of a city
become great once more!
What We Need And What You Get
Basically the purpose of this campaign is to raise funds for the two most important components of this project: the trolley and the driver.
The used trolleys we are looking at are available for amounts in the range between $25,000 and $35,000. All of the other money we raise will be applied to operating costs (insurance, permits, advertising/marketing, maintenance, PA/sound system, parking and delivery of the vehicle, etcetera) and the driver's salary for the first couple months.
When you contribute, you become part of the adventure! From a 2-hour tour to your own private events, you, too, can make Newark your city, even if just for a day. Plus, you'll be helping to promote our historic preservation and cultural arts organizations.
Even if we finish somewhere shy of our goal and can't buy our own vehicle, we will still be able to lease a trolley (though less cost-efficient in the long run), pay the driver and provide an incredible visit for our guests.
There is already a route mapped out for the trolley to stop at all of our unique arts and cultural institutions, independent galleries, restaurant rows, shopping districts, performing arts venues and outdoor sculpture sites. Add a lively and eclectic mix of music spanning all genres and generations and you will have an experience you will never forget!
