Do you love Mom & Pop Businesses?
Do you love R/C cars, model planes, trains and automobiles?
Do you love the John Hughes movie with nearly the same name?
Do you want to help save a shop that creates lifelong bonding moments with grandparents, parents and their kids?
Do you want to help save a shop that can transform lives by taking a hobby and turning it into incredible careers? (No kidding from filmmakers to rocket scientists, Evett's has had multi-generational customers coming in who tell the staff the shop and the hobbies inspired their life long careers.)
Do you want to help save a shop that gets kids off of the screens/video games/phones/devices and the streets and teaches them valuable life lessons? (Again, no kidding, lots of kids hang out at the shop and spend more time outdoors when they are interested in a hobby like the ones you can explore at Evett's).
Do you long for a local hobby shop that can actually help you fix your stuff when it’s broken, unlike those giant online retailers that can’t do anything for you?
If you answered yes to just one of those questions, then Evett’s Model Shop is the place for you.
Evett’s model shop has been around for 72 years. That's SEVENTY TWO with a capital 7!
It was originally run by Colby Evett who was in the shop almost every single day for 65 years until his passing. That's 23,725 days for anyone who's counting. And before that, he was serving our country and engineering real planes.
He built that plane by hand. By himself. It's in the shop now if you want to see it.
Today, his wife Yvonne keeps the shop going with the help of two guys who love this stuff as much as Colby did. Their names are Luke and Gene - come on in and meet them!
Luke’s an ex-Marine who served his country and now wants to serve you. He knows more about R/C cars than just about anybody, or anything, including the model robot behind the counter.
Gene’s a retired rock musician, who builds award winning models because the fame from being a rock star is fleeting. And he's willing to prove it by putting his guitar up as one of the perks here.
But here’s the rub folks. Someone who shall remain nameless, with no soul, conscious or internal moral compass has decided to increase the rent. And not just a normal increase like 3% a year or anything like you see in a standard lease, but like 33%, because, well, we think he’s actually a weasel. A real life weasel who has probably learned how to use a computer and fax machine so he could take advantage of people. And this is already on top of multiple, previous rent increases for, in his words, a “market correction.”
But has he market corrected the shop and fixed the place up?
Nope.
Modernized it?
Nope.
Brought it up to Code?
Nope.
He hasn’t actually done a thing because weasels don't like R/C cars or models.
And this weasel doesn’t care if this local hobby institution stays or goes.
But we care, and so do Yvonne, Luke and Gene.
Why should you care?
Because if you don’t, shops like this will disappear and Yvonne will have nothing to live for (besides her kids and her family) and she lives for bringing in fresh baked goods every day and taking care of customers.
Rent is high in LA.
The current landlord sucks, and we need your help to keep this place going strong.
So, instead of just asking for money to help us find a new location, we’re going to reward any/all that make donations with some of the coolest perks ever offered on Indiegogo, besides dinner with Justin Timberlake and a few thousand other cool things we’ve seen.
But don’t worry, your money is still better spent here.
So, checkout the side bar for more detail regarding the awesome stuff you can expect to do or get with your donations.
So, in short, please help us save this store. We don't want to see stores like this go away. They are incredible places for families and kids of all ages to learn about wonderful hobbies. They create true bonding moments between parents and their children that are multi-generational in nature. They build life long skill sets for hobbies that can flourish into careers (the store has so many creative people in so many different industries as regular customers). It would be a real shame to see this place go.
Hope you can help.
