Mezcal - a distilled Mexican spirit made from fermented agave.
Mezcaleria - a place to laugh, dance, sing, and drink; a second home.
Our journey to open Gallo Pelón, NC's first Mezcaleria, began more than two years ago. We had always planned on developing the second story above Centro in our little 100 year old building, and by the spring of 2012 we were ready to break ground. After the project was fully underway, complex issues with building and fire codes slowed our stride. Every time we thought we were in the clear, another concern would pop up, inflating our budget and pushing us closer to the red. After passing the point of no return, we sat down with friends in the community and came to the conclusion that a crowd-sourced fundraiser was the perfect thing to raise that last 10% and get us past the finish line.
As an immigrant, proud mother, friend, and business woman, asking for help comes with a great amount of anxiety and vulnerability, but I am reminded that Gallo Pelón is much more than me. Gallo Pelón is an extension of our community. It is a place to drink, laugh and connect. It is a realization of the hopes and dreams of those who have dedicated themselves to this exciting new gathering space- those who depend on it’s completion.
While reflecting on the reasons for this grassroots fundraiser, we are reminded of the meaningful rewards, the challenges, and the tremendous community that exists around Centro. In our seven years downtown, we have continued to move forward, and with every step and every victory, we have helped promote a community that now thrives with creativity and intention. Our goal here is to continue to forge that path of collaboration, so I am honestly and openly asking for your help-
Angela Salamanca | Chef & Owner - Centro Mexican Restaurant
Marshall Davis | Manager & Barman - Gallo Pelón Mezcaleria
With your support, we are hopeful to raise the final $30,000.00 that will allow us to open our doors and finally share this new chapter of the Centro narrative with you.
