I am a part time student and I recently went to India for a mission trip to help the people there — to be a comfort to those who are hurting and to bring hope to those who are suffering.

After visiting Yeleswaram, a town in the East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh, my heart broke when I learnt about what happened to one of the pastors in a village there.

The stock picture you see is a picture of Pastor Praveen and his family posing in front of their kitchen. At the end of 2015, a great cyclone hit the region, and like many others he lost his house. As a result, the house was beyond repair.

Cyclones are prevalent in this region of India and unless a house made of bricks is built, he will face the same issue again. Houses in the region are made of bamboo, palm leaves and walls are made of mud and clay. When inclement weather hits, the structural integrity of the house would be affected and it would only be a matter of time before the house will be inhospitable.

A little background information on Pastor Praveen’s family: his father is a pastor and they are very poor. As his father had 6 sons in the family, it was hard to raise all of them up, so he made arranged marriages for all the sons to send them away.

Praveen chose to act on his faith and dedicated himself to serving God. The church he currently leads came as an inheritance from his father. He has no income, and is supported by the offerings made to the church, just about 300 rupees (approximately $6 SGD a week) and portions of rice barely enough to get by.

Praveen is content with the amount he gets for the sustenance of him and his family. When he talks about his situation, one thing that came up was his concern of how him and his family would require a roof over their heads so that his wife and children can live comfortably. He has 2 sons and a daughter, aged 7, 5 and 4 respectively.

It costs $10,000 USD to build a stone house, made with bricks and concrete. The cost is inclusive of electrical connections and a stove. His wife currently cooks in a makeshift hut and she uses fire to cook. There is always a risk of the makeshift hut will catch fire and burning down.

If you want to witness the joy of giving to those in need, the house will be available for visiting upon completion!

It is my hope and wish that Praveen and his family will be able to get a home built soon so that him and his family need not live in such conditions while having kids to take care of.

Any amount you contribute will go a long way in helping Praveen and his family realize their dream of having a house. Thank you and please help to get the word out so that others can help too!
